Fruitmarket. Albion

3 Street. 7.30pm. £14 (£12). Joe Henderson's

i appearances here have

.. been infrequent over the

years. and this

combination of his

working trio with

George Mraz on bass and

Al Foster on drums - and

; pianist Mseleku could be a real winner. See

Fruitmarket. Albion

Street. 10.30pm. £10 (£8). Darling of the dance-floor crowd. the vibraphonist was making a fashionable mix ofjazz. soul. funk and rap long before it was

i fashionable. DJ Nick

Peacock provides support. I Phil Bancroft Octet City Cafe Bar. Bell Street. 8pm. £7 (£5). A new venture front the experimentally-inclined saxophonist. which will feature an idiomatically wide-ranging new work completed with the aid of a commission from the Scottish Arts Council.

I

THOMAS CHAPlN

l It anyone in the programme is likely to provoke a

puzzled ‘who?’ from even reasonably well-inlonned jazz tans, it is surely New York saxophonist Thomas Chapin. His booking is the result of a link tonned with the

Knitting Factory, a radical New York venue/record label

I with a reputation for presenting the unexpected. Chapin is not quite as left-field as many of the club’s denizens, but nor is he as mainstream as his period of employment with Lionel Hampton might suggest. He travels with his own trio, and ought to be worth

checking out.
