SCOTTISH BALLET: 25TH ANNIVERSARY GALA TRIPLE BILL

Seen at Edinburgh Festival Theatre, 29 Jun. I’m a tan. The Edinburgh Festival Theatre is everything it’s cracked up to be, and tor a city that’s long been lacking a decent venue for dance - they don’t come much better than this. What a treat then to see our very own Scottish Ballet celebrating 25 years in the business by becoming the first dance company to set foot on the stage. Dinky programme tied with tartan bows held sugary promises but at the end of the day only one of the items on this triple bill lived up to the hype. Ironically tor the title, Balanchine’s Scotch Symphony does not sit well with the Scottish Ballet. To pull ott Balanchine you need that pared-down, long-limbed Balanchine style and, aside irom the soloist Daria Klimentova, there wasn’t much of it around. I know it's a Romantic ballet but this was just too chocolate-boxy. And then there was Kylian. What a transtormation. With a flick of the upper back and a ripple of shock waves through the body the dancers harness the power and beauty of the sea, and with it Kylian’s modern style. Scottish Ballet is the only company besides his own llederlands Dans Theater who Kylian will allow to dance Overgrown Land. You can see why.

Scotch Symphony

Untortunately, the evening did not end on such a high note. At least not dance-wise. Tippet’s tutu ballet set to Bruch’s Violin Concerto is no great Shakes. Put it next to hotshot prodigy Vanessa Mae’s rendition of said concerto and it pales into insignificance. The dancers gave it their best shot, but they didn’t stand a chance against Tippet’s instantly forgettable ballet and Mae’s undoubted brilliance. Just as well tor Scottish Ballet on this super- Sparkling, special day that they could rest on the significant laurels oi Overgrown Land. (Ellie Carr)

which Berkoff shows off his considerable physical control in a horror tale by Edgar Allen Poe and a comic monologue of his own. At times it teeters on the edge of style over content. but at its best it is remarkable.
