FILM LISTINGS

BACARDI BLACK

I Staggered (15) (Martin Clunes. UK. 1994) Martin Clunes. Michael Praed. Anna Chancellor. 95 mins. Drugged at his stag night and dumped naked on a Scottish island. Neil (Martin Clunes) has only a couple of days to get back to London for his wedding. But nasty best man and supposed best friend Gary (Michael Praed) has put plenty more stumbling blocks in Neil's way. Staggered knocks about from one comic set- piece to another. with debut director Clunes making a good job of keeping the laughs coating. Edinburgh: Odeon.

I T8190 (15) (Patrice Leconte. France. 1993) Richard Bohringer. Philippe Noiret. Thierry Lhermitte. 88 mins. The wife of a pilot is having an affair. so the advice from his judge uncle is to enlist the services of a professional hitman. A provocative. breezy jest of a film that is unlike the tautly controlled. intimate drama of Monsieur Hire and The Hairdresser 's Husband. Glasgow: GFI‘.

I III Thee Meteors (PG) (Stephen Herek. US. 1993) Chris O‘Donnell. Charlie Sheen. Kiefer Sutherland. Oliver Platt. 106 mins. Young D'Artagnan (O'Donnell) teams up with a trio of the king‘s bodyguard and together they set out to foil Richelieu's planstcntral: MacRobert.

I 32 Short Films About Glenn Gould (U) (Francois Girard. Canada. 1993) Coim Feore. Derek Keurvorst. Katya Ladan. 93 mins. Partly a homage to the 32 sections of Bach's Goldberg Variations. partly a radical approach to screen biography. this film tells the life-story of piano genius Glenn Gould without resorting to cliched archive footage. The acting is superb. the structure fascinating. the music as vibrant as ever. Rarely has the act of artistic creation been presented on screen with such creativity. See preview. Glasgow: GFT.

I Melina (U) (Don Bluth. US. 1993) Animator Bluth comes close to rivalling Disney with this charming fairy tale filled with little folk. princes. easy-to-follow messages and a Ban-y Manilow soundtrack. Young kids will love it and even the cynically hard-hearted may soften. Glasgow: MGMs. Edinburgh: UCl. Strathclyde: UCl Clydebank.

I To. And Viv (15) (Brian Gilbert. US/UK. 1993) Willem Dafoe. Miranda Richardson. Rosemary Harris. 125 mins. Not the most favourable portrait of the author of The Wasteland. as the film centres on Eliot‘s role in the unnecessary committal of his wife in a mental asylum. However. the dialogue is stilted. the direction flat and Dafoe gives an uncharacteristically poor performance. Richardson. however. is more powerful in another of the ‘slightly mad' roles she has made her own. Glasgow: GFT.

I True Lies(15) (James Cameron. US. 1994) Arnold Schwarsenegger. Jamie Lee Curtis. Tom Arnold. 141 mins. Arnie masquerades as a computer salesman to keep long-suffering spouse Curtis in the dark about his real job in the hi-tech spy world. At a price tag of over $100m. Cameron's attempt to redefine the visual possibilities of the action genre is thrilling. disappointing and exasperating in almost equal measures. but at least the money's up there on the screen. Dodgy valuejudgements. brilliant wholesale destruction. See review. General release.

I TM Rome (18) (Tony Scott. US. 1993) Christian Slater. Patricia Arquette. Dennis Hopper. 119 mins. Comic bookstore assistant Clarence meets. sleeps with and manies novice hooker Alabama within a matter of hours. then the lovebirds find themselves on the run with an accidentally stolen case of cocaine. Limelight- stealing cameos and writer Quentin Tarantino's verbal set-pieces fire this excellent movie. the epitome of disposable pop culture for the fast- food generation. Glasgow: GFI‘. Edinburgh: Odeon. UCl.
