I ESNDALE AGRICULTURAL SHOW Sat 24. 9.30am—5pm. The Castleholm. Langholm. £2 i50p). (£1 after 2pm). car park £1. Everything you‘d expect from a country agricultural show. Livestock competitions ranging from Jacob Sheep to cattle and horses by way of goats and donkeys. Horse driving event. vintage machinery and parade ofchampions round the show ring at 2pm. Also industrial and craft tents. the always important beer tent and lots of trade stands and stalls. The South Of Scotland SheafTossing Championship takes place in the main ring at 2.15pm.

LOTNIANS & FIFE

I DAWN GOOSE WATCH Sunrise. Sat 24 and weekly until Sat 22 October. Vane Farm RSPB Nature Reserve. Loch Leven (on the 139097. one mile east ofjunction 5 on the M90). Phone 0577 862355 for times and to book a place. £3. More than 20.000 pink-footed and greylag geese over-winter on Loch Leven and the sight of them all flying out from the loch at sunrise is breathtaking. There are a limited number of spaces on this early morning adventure. so book as soon as possible! The price includes breakfast.

I FUHGAL FORAYS As autumn turns. mushrooms and fungi are sprouting out from under the trees and across the meadows. See feature on the food page. The following fungal forays offer the opportunity to search for fungi with someone who can tell their ceps from their psilocybin:

I HOOFSTOCK AT THE ZOO Sat i/Sun 2. 9.30am—6pm. Edinburgh Zoo. Corstorphine Road. £5.10 (£2.70). 031 334 9171. (Zoo open daily). Special activities have been organised at the zoo for every weekend through October. Every weekend there will be animal- handling classes. brass rubbing and free activity worksheets and games. Over this weekend the keepers will be introducing two of the new babies at the zoo: Kora the giraffe and Meru the rhino.

THE NORTH

I ALFORD AUCTION AND AUTOJUMBLE Sun 25. 1 lam—5pm. Grampian Transport Museum. Alford. 28 miles west of Aberdeen on the A944. Free. 09755 62292. Viewing from 11am. bidding commences at 1pm with the small lots and accessories. followed by motorbikes. classic and vintage cars. commercial vehicles. tractors and barn engines. Famous for its bargains. Alford pitches itself towards the less wealthy collector who fancies a motor to restore over the winter. so don’t expect to drive your bargain away!

I 4x4 DRIVING EVENT Sat l/Sun 2. Newtonmore village. 15 miles south of Aviemore. This is an excellent family weekend out. well worth driving north for. either to take part (entry f 15 per vehicle. contact Colin Stewart on 0540 673 518 after 6pm) or simply to spectate. On each day vehicles take part in a zany mix of ten tasks. including a hill climb. blindfold driving. a water challenge. car gymkhana. and balancing your vehicle on a see-saw.

STRATHCLYOE

I CROSSFORD RAFT RACE Sun 25. noon—4pm. Crossford. Lanarkshire. Spectators free. Three rafts will leave Hazelbank at regular intervals on their way downstream to the Sandyholm Garden Centre. Judging of rafts begins at noon. The first of the expected 60 rafts will leave at about 1pm and the best vantage point is said to be the Crossford Bridge with its conveniently local Ian.

I LADY VICTORIA COLLIERY OPEN DAY Sun 25, 11am-4pm. Scottish Mining Museum, Newtongrange, Midlothian. 031 663 7519. museum, which aims to preserve and interpret the Scottish coal industry for the public, is reckoned to be the finest surviving colliery in Europe. Former miners share their experiences and recollections with visitors on a guided tour of the site, which also includes the Miners’ Skill, an exhibition describing the various jobs oi the men who worked at lady Victoria in its 150-year history. On the open day all guided tours of the colliery and visitors centre exhibitions are free, and there are the added attractions of face painting, pit pony rides, and a bouncy castle for the kids. Bigger kids might care to have a go at the bar-fly jump onto a veicro wall or bungee running. Barbecued snacks and refreshments will be available throughout the day. The museum is open daily, mam-4pm until Friday 30 September. Normal entry is £1.95
