You’ve seen the movies. Beefy blokes in Sly Stallone headbands and dangerous women in clingy Lycra kickboxing their way through backstreets and alleys in a seedy underworld where only razor sharp reflexes and high kicks can triumph over evil.

flow meet the fitness craze. ‘Kickbox Kid 10’ may sit on the 50p shelves of video stores countrywide, but kickboxing as a sport is still very popular in the UK, and now it seems the rigorous training required to master this most brutal of martial arts is finding a place in the mainstream fitness industry - kickboxercise has arrived.

Doof! Mugger’g-eye view of kickboxers alone can’t reach. ‘The adrenaline buzz you get from kickboxercise is amazing,’ says Jordan. ‘You also get a really good laugh, which makes it seem more like fun and less like exercise.’

The reason for this is that Jordan has retained the tactical aspects of the sport in his class. ‘In my sessions you’re not just working out,’ says Jordan, ‘you’re learning to tight so the skill is a by-product of the workout.’

And defying the notion that girls can’t punch their way out of a paper bag, a high proportion of those attending the classes are women. Jordan welcomes the trend. ‘Several of the girls in the class have actually been attacked and found they’ve automatically used the skills gained at kickboxercise in self defence,’ he explains.
