Hetbusters: on a video terrace near you

In the beginning there were magazines. Then there were video . magazines. How inevitably, as football becomes the familiar topic of the chattering classes, comes the football video magazine. Retailing at £6.99, HetBusters is stuffed with glorious goals, terrifying tackles and crappy cliches.

When compared with BBC 2’s ‘Standing Room Only’ it looks a tad Diadora League Standard, but its sixty minutes do give it more scope to discuss football issues than SRO.

Ironically, NetBusters devotes the majority of its second monthly issue to a fascinating insight into how the BBC provide ‘Match of the Day Live’. Such interesting facts brought to light are: that it takes three weeks to prepare for each live broadcast, that the combined cost of the two outside broadcast lorries is a staggering £4.5 million (that’s where your licence fee goes) and that pundit Alan Hanson’s favourite eyeliner is Boot’s Ho 7 (erm, that last bit’s a lie).

One thing that HetBusters is not short of is ideas, which come at you from every angle: there’s a hilarious guide to the age old art of running onto the pitch, how to score perfectly with Paul

Elliot (ahem) and tips from the England physio as to how to deal and recover from dead legs. To this end, HetBusters swivels and scores with its main market the players and managers of Sunday boys’ teams.

The real problem with HetBusters is its release date. By the time it’s on the video terraces of your local John Menzies the action is already four weeks out of date. Most of the action from this month’s issue concerns play that took place in July 1994. You will also have to be pretty fascinated with the English game, as HetBusters deals exclusively with it. There was not a single snippet of Scottish action (not even the traditional patronising Old Firm piece). All in all, NetBusters may well build into a pretty decent compilation of the year’s (English) action, but if you’ve passed puberty it’s probably best if you stick to reading ‘Four Four Two’.
