WEDNESDAY 29 Edinburgh

I llerb Miller Orchestra Usher Hall. Lothian Road. 228 1155. 7.30pm. £8.50—£10. It is now 50 years since Glenn Miller disappeared over the English Channel. but the appeal of his music continues unabated. Conifer Records have just released a two-disc set of wartime recordings. cut two weeks before his death. which had been thought lost. and include a number of previously unrecorded tunes. This is the American outfit. not the more familiar British one. and they will be joined on this VE Celebration Tour by clarinetist Peanuts Hucko and his wife. singer Louise Tobin. The band also play at the Rothes Hall. Glenrothes (Thurs 30. 01592 611101) and The Music Hall in Aberdeen (Fri 31. 01224 641122). See Sat 1 for Glasgow date.

Pianist Chick Lyall gives the premiere performance of a new piece for quintet. commissioned by Basement Jazz in Glasgow. ln what may be a sign of future developments. the currently homeless Basement Jazz will stage a Glasgow performance at the Ramshorn Drama Centre on Sun 2. and the piece will also be heard at The Lemon Tree in Aberdeen on Thurs 30. Lyall. meanwhile. has a new CD. Hit/(It’ll Music, just out on the experimental Leo Lab label. featuring the more abstract music of the trio Green Room.
