WHITE LINE FEVER

Football and footballers are on one of their occasional forays from their

5 traditional habitat in sports pages

onto the front pages. The nefarious

otf-the-ball skills and pastimes of

Cantona, Paul Mercer and Grobbelar have all rated lront page splashes, raising questions about the integrity of the players and the game itself.

So what? Sportsmen’s private and public lives always have and always will be easy and legitimate prey for the media, but they’re ten a penny. Only when the player’s rise to fame has been meteoric and his downfall equally precipitous does the story assume the proportions of a Greek tragedy and become a truly fascinating spectacle. Diego Maradona is one such player and Channel 4’s True Stories team is broadcasting a documentary about the man, the myth and the nose candy.

The leature-length documentary follows the fortunes of a young, fresh- faced Maradona emerging from the slums of Buenos Aires to his World Cup triumphs and audiences with the Pope, followed swiftly by allegations of Mafia links, coke snorting and all- night brothel sessions. The strength of this documentary is that it looks behind the tabloid stories and examines Maradona’s career in a broader context. llis marriage to his

Champ or scamp? long term live-in lover in Buenos Aires’

most prestigious cathedral, with his two daughters as bride’s maids did little to endear him to Argentina’s

, conservative Catholic establishment.

While this goes some way to explaining his fall from grace, it

certainly wasn’t the stuff of headlines

on this side of the Atlantic.

The filmmakers have made no attempt to judge Maradona, rather they’ve let the facts speak for themselves. As Maradona says: ‘liow can they judge me when they have never experienced the highs and lows that l have?’ Enough said. (Jonathan Trew)

True Stories: Maradona is broadcast on Channel 4 at 9.30pm on Thursday 18 May.
