38 The List 2-15 Jun 1995

The Garage. Glasgow. 22 May. A quiet. refreshing storm whips in and out of Glasgow. confirming the arrival of one of the most curious hands of recent times. The Puressence sound is brooding. abstract and deftly melodic; they are caught somewhere between The Cocteau Twins and James.

Their sprightly first single. ‘1 Suppose'. peaked at Number 120 and currently there is little hype surrounding the Manchester quartet. Instead. a couple of singles (look out for the emphatic ‘Cast Long Shadows') will be released before an album at the turn of the year. By then. they could be the new Oasis. Definitely should be. Not only are they gloriously miserable. they are fronted by a man who makes Liam Gallagher look like a dweeb. James Mudriczki will certainly become more famous for his eccentricities. but he has a voice that could move mountain ranges. lLs multitone shimmery is reminiscent of numerous singers but you just can’t say who. Horse? Feargal Sharkey? Mark Hollis? Sinead O’Connor? 1t wafts. seduces and kills all at once. Live. it is even better.

Mudriczki looks

deranged and the whites

of his eyes bulge threateningly. Does he think the audience has killed his family? I think he believes we have. Mudriczki is all your favourite nutters rolled into one. He plays step- aerobics with the monitor and as he flirts around the stage. there are shades of one of his heroes. Ian Curtis. The way he molests the mike stand suggests Iggy Pop. but a good dose of Monissey foppishness soon arrests that. in all his madness. his voice retains an enviable composure. He is. of course. nothing without his band to feed off. They look like an(grrrr)y bunch of thugs who seem to have lost the will to be happy. They probably have. but at least they’re making some damned fine music meantime. (Philip Dorward)
