Very impressive. Glasgow: Gl’l".

Queen 0101!!" Space (18) (Edward Bernds. US.

1958) 80 mins. Once upon a time. oft-married celebrity and talk show star Zsa Zsa Gabor was an actress. and this is one of her daftest moments. She‘s a scientist on Venus who leads a revolt against the Queen in favour of Male Liberation - lucky that some horny space cowboys have just crashlanded on the planet. A new definition of high camp. Glasgow: Gl-T. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. Skin Deep ( l 8) (Midi Onodera. Canada. 1994) 85 mins. Film director Alex plans an exploitation film on tattooing and the culture of pleasure/pain. but in the process undermines her relationship with her lover Montana when contact with charismatic (‘hris goes beyond research. Glasgow: GFI'. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. Super 8 1/2 (18) (Bruce l.aBruce. Canada. 1994) Gay porn auteur LaBruce sends himself up in this mock-doc about a Warholian gay porn auteur on the decline. Hardcore action (the strongest you're likely to see on a legitimate big screen) altemates with sortie good comedy and satire. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. World And Time Enough (18) (Eric Mueller. US. 1994) 90 mins. Voted Best Gay Feature at the San Francisco lntemational Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. Mueller's comic take on a group of twentysornethings makes a great companion piece to Cu Fish. Mark is an aspiring artist and gay activist: his partner Joey is searching for his biological parents due to his adoptive parents' homophobia. Together they live thei.r lives in the midst of Minneapolis. Glasgow: GET. I Mad Dogs And Englishmen (18) (Henry Cole. UK. 1995) Elizabeth Hurley. C. Thomas Ilowell. Liz Hurley may have made a few films in the past. but this is the first to be released since she appeared on the cover of every magazine imaginable. Here. she's the object of desire of messenger boy Ilowell. Director Cole tries (and fails) to recreate the drugs. booze and sex party feel of a modern decadent London. but it‘s all a terrible. boring mistake. Edinburgh: UCI. I The Madness ()1 King George (PG) (Nicholas Hytner. UK. 1994) Nigel Ilawthorne. Helen Mitten. Rupert Everett. 110 mins. Alan Bennett's adaption of his own stage play is a great British film in its own right with no lingering sense of theatricality. Nigel Hawthorne's excellent portrayal of the King. his demented behaviour threatening the stability of the nation. gives the film an emotional core. while the script's themes are intelligently handled throughout. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Man Of The House (PG) (US. 1995) Chevy Chase. Farah Fawcett. Jonathan Taylor Thomas. Ilold the front page a half-decent movie from Chevey Chase. He plays Jack. new man in the life of Fawcett. an attractive divorcee artist living in bliss with her eleven-year-old son Bert. who sets out to get rid of this interloper into their cosy twosome. Some mildly amusing ‘getting to know you' scenes pep up this gentle. patchy. family-oriented fare. Glasgow: Odeon. Edinburgh. Odeon. UCI. Strathclyde: Odeon Hamilton. UCI Clydebannk. I The “angler (18) (Tobe Hooper. Canada. 1995) Robert Englund. Ted Levine. Daniel Matmor. 105 mins. Another duff movie from Hooper. this Stephen King adaptation about a demonically possessed laundry press features dodgy sfx and stodgy plotting. A cop (Levine) is called in to investigate a series of industrial accidents at the laundry owned by the irascible Englund. but all he discovers are a pile of washed-out. deja vtr cliches. Edinburgh: UCl. Strathclyde: UCI Clydebank. I Mary Shelley's Frankenstein ( IS) (Kenneth Branagh. US/UK. 1994) Robert De Niro. Kenneth Branagh. Helena Bonham Carter. 120 mins. Ambitious medical student Victor Frankenstein discovers the means of regenerating dead tissue. but so horrified is he with his success that he abandons his creation - bringing a terrible revenge upon his friends and family. Keeping close to Mary Shelley‘s book. Branagh departs from it only to clarify and expand upon her aims. The scope is immense. the themes deep and literate. the design first class. Scottish-born composer Patrick Doyle will be present at this screening. Glasgow: GET. I Mean Streets (18) (Martin Scorsese. US. 1973) Harvey Keitel. Robert de Niro. David Proval. 110 mins. Tony's Bar is the base for four young Italian-Americans. whose increasingly illegal activities lead to tragedy. Vividly observed character study which combines breathtaking technique with a pervasive sense of corruption. Keitel and dc Niro give of their very best. Glasgow: OFT. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Hotel La Vie (18) (Bertrand Blier. France. 1990) Charlotte Gainsbourg. Anouk Gn'nberg. Gerard Depardieu. Michel Blane. 117 mins. Two French teenagers embark on a road journey that takes them back to the Occupation as well as across the country. Blier's ferocious wit takes on big themes like AIDS and the Holocaust. creating an effective but self-conscious blend of

bufftxmery and sobriety. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I The Modems ( 15) (Alan Rudolph. US. 1988) Keith (‘arradine. Linda Firoentino. John Lone.

Genevieve Bujold. 126 mins. 1926 Paris is the

setting for Rudolph's latest triumph. a playful exploration of the fake and the genuine in art and love. Against the background of the expatriate American artistic circle of Hemingway and Stein. it examines a series of tangled relationships whose effects reverberate around the boho art world. Excellent Altman/Rudolph

rep company performances. an unpredictable

directorial flair. and the dramatic shaping of complex themes into a delirious drama. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I Moon In The Gutter ( l8) (Jean-Jacques Beineix. France. 1983) Gerard Depardieu.

Nastassja Kinski. Victoria Abril. 126 mins.

Depardieu is an increasingly obsessive dockworker on the trail of his sister‘s rapist

while at the same time getting involved with the

I Mrs Parker And The Vicious Circle (15) (Alan

mysterious and filthy rich Kinski. A celebrated

disaster. Beineix's difficult second feature boasts

an operatic approach to the visuals btrt precious little emotional involvement. Fans of [)r'vu should still see it. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

l Rudolph. IFS. 1994) JenniferJason Leigh.

(‘ampbell Scott. Matthew Broderick. 124 mins. A veritable legend in biting one-liners. Dorothy Parker. along with her sophisticated group of

literary friends. wielded incredible influence in jazz age America. Alan Rudolph's film reveals

her to be a passionate. contradictory woman who

toyed alternately with success and suicide.

Jennifer Jason Leigh's performance is unique

and certainly remarkable. btrt there is a sense that it is too reliant on surface details such as

accent. Edinburgh: Cameo. Central: MacRobert.

Fife: Adam Smith.

I I Muriel’s Wedding (15) (PJ. Hogan. Australia. .

1994) Toni Collette. Rachel Griffiths. Bill

Hunter. 105 mins. U 'lv ducklin Mtrriel decides 1: . E

to leave behind her boring life in I’orpoise Spit

and search for her Prince Charming in the big

1 lights of Sydney. A bouncy Abba soundtrack and i

fairy tale ambiance add to the charm of one of

the year's best crowd-pleasers. As sparkling. in its own way. as The: Adventures Of Priscilla.

General release.

I Napier University Showreel A selection of

work from the five courses at Napier

University's Scottish Film School. which created around 1.00 minutes of film and video this

: eyar. making it one of the most prolific

producers of student films in Britain. Mon 26 only. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I Natural Born Killers ( 18) (Oliver Stone. US. 1994) Woody Hartelson. Juliette Lewis. Robert Downey Jr. 119 mins. Stone's visual and aural

assault makes for one of the most remarkable cinematic experiences in years; his attempts to

marry style with content. and provide a damning expose of the media adulation of serial killers is less successful. let down by his trademark overstatement. Violent. mesmerising. hallucinatory and bold in its use of various film formats. NBK is a landmark in M'I‘V-influenced filmmaking. Edinburgh: Cameo. UCl. Strathclyde: Magnum.

I Hell (12) (Michael Apted. US. 1994) Jodie

Foster. Liam Neeson. Natasha Richardson. Isolated from the modem world for her entire

life. Nell (Foster) must prove that site is capable

of looking after herself in the wilds or she will be taken into care. The fact that she speaks orin

in a language all of her own doesn't help. but

sympathetic doctor Neeson takes her side. Foster's stand-out performance is perhaps more

theatrical than cinematic. but that doesn't hinder a film that avoids most of the patronising pitfalls

it sets up. Fife: Adam Smith.

I light 01 The Ghouls (18) (Ed Wood. 138. 1959) Duke Moore. Kenne Duncan. Paul Marco. 69 mins. Pretty bad. even in the Ed Wood oeuvre. this one revolves around a conman posing as a medium (Dr Acula!) who unexpectedly revives the corpses of those he's supposed to contact. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I lobody’s Fool (15) (Robert Benton. US. 1994) Paul Newman. Bruce Willis. Jessica Tandy. 110 mins. In a performance to rank with his best. Paul Newman is a down-on-his-luck construction worker scraping a living in the wintry upstate New York town of North Bath. The more we see his destiny intertwine with those around him. the more weight and meaning cling to an apparently marginal existence. As subtle. humane. wise and witty a piece as has come out of Hollywood in many a long year. Fife: Adam Smith.

I Once Were Warriors (18) (Lee Tamahon'. New Zealand. 1993) Rena Owen. Termuera Monison. Mamaengaroa Kerr-Bell. 99 mins. Tamahori's feature debut is a gritty Loach-style look at domestic violence and disenfranchisement within Auckland's Maori underclass. It's a film about survival of individuals. of families. and of race. It's also an uncompromising. shocking film that doesn't sensationalise its material. Strathclyde: Magnum.
