Phactfile

Betban Cole answers those crucial queries

I Name Roger Sanchez.

I Age 27.

I Occupation DJ, producer, remixer. disco revivalist.

I Disco revivalist? Yup, Roger’s epic remake of Stevie Wonder‘s Another Star catapulted him to the top of the disco nouveau stakes.

I Yovvsah! Well, it was only to be expected considering Roger. like Kenny Dope. Chicago’s DJ Sneak, Germany’s Force inc and Danny Tenaglia has a sensible appreciation of the beauty of original disco.

I Hot a big fan of Boney M then? Not exactly. Think Salsoul. Prelude, West End and TK and fusion style producers like Celia Cruz, Jack MacDuff. Gil Sc0tt Heron. Roy Ayers. Oh and Kathy Sledge who sang on his Another Star remake. I Sister Sledge serious disco - surely some mistake According to Roger. Kathy has a lovely raspy quality to her voice. So there.

I Any other Sanchez surprises? He used to be an architecture student but ditched it for music: ‘1 was like Spiderrnan mild-mannered architect by day, DJ by night‘. And his favourite club is The Tunnel.

I In New York right? Er Glasgow actually. According to Roger its the location of many great nights DJing he feels closest to the crowd there. And who are we to argue.

I Alternative conversation topics His label, Narcotic. set up last year and already home to a string of top quality releases. Check Ashley Beedle‘s marvellous Roots Revolutions EP. The Dream Team track or Brotherhood Of Soul‘s I'll Be Right There for proof. And his album of course Secret Weapons V01 2 packed with militant percussives. sinuous Latin flourishes and heart- wrenching string arrangements.

I Hot for the faint of heart Roger claims the Secret Weapons are his toys, his ammunition to rock the crowd. No doubt about it. that’s a promise.

Roger Sanchez. 01s at The Tunnel on Sat [7 June. Secret lieu/tons Vol 2 is out now on Nttrt'ttt/t‘.
