Leoni is the only witness to the accompanying rntrrder. btrt she‘ll only talk to cop Smith. Smith's out of the office. so partner Lawrence assumes his identity. and the two buddies with badges have to keep the swapped role stunt up until trial date. Plenty of opportunities for comedy and action are made the most of in this new [X)Sl-.\Illl'pll_\' black cop franchise. General release.

I Before Sunrise ( 15) (Richard Linklater. US. 1995) Julie Delpy. lithan llawke. Andrea Iickert. 101 mins. American lnter-Railer' llawke and French student Delpy are the strangers on a train who strike tip a chance conversation and spend a night wandering around Vienna. The actors give career-best performances while director Linklater veers into [Eric Rohrner territory with a funny. sweet and fundamentally wise movie. Strathclyde: l'Cl Clydebank.

I Beneath The Valley Of The llltravixens ( 18) (Russ Meyer. US. 1970) Dolly Read. Cynthia Myers. Marcia McBroom. John LaZar. 109 mins. Mad Meyer's first dip into tinseltown's big bucks allowed him a surprisingly free hand with the big breasts. and the resultant romp through all-girl pop-star mania is as irrepressiny ftill of sleaze and wildness as his earlier oeuvre. An American physician (Arquette). travelling through Asia. stumbles upon the law less military dictatorship of Burma and the mass slaughter can‘ied out there in the late 1980s. I The Big Blue ( 15) (Lite Bessori. France. 1988) Rosanna Arqrrette. Jean-Marc Barr. Jean Reno. 120 mins. Barr and Reno. friends since they were children. ate divers competing to reach the greatest depths without the aid of breathing equipment. and also rivals for the romantic attentions of Ms Arqtrette. A commercial smash in its native France. Besson's film is a stunningly photographed visual experience in varying shades of blue. liven if the plot is a load of tosh. the dolphins are nice. lidinburgh: Filmhotise.

'l'he makeshift Brady household is caught in a 70s timewaip of flares. groovey chicks and parental homilies. so while trying to pay off their back taxes. their anachronistic attitudes clash with the moral ambiguities of the 90s. Coppola's version is not the strict Stoker adaptation that many had hoped for. htit is a visual feast nonetheless. Oltlman taps his own dark. sexy.

deserves a big screen airing. not least for the excellent performances of its stars. ()nnond is a dentist who falls in love with a prison inmate (Roth). btit finds herself caught between romance and thriller suspense when she sets about uncovering the details of his crime. A group of friends meet and socialise together as a relief from their college studies in Dublin. with love and disappointment inevitably rearing their heads. A slice of life in 1957 Ireland so parochial it might as well be another planet ()‘Connor's adaptation of Maeve Binchy's novel is faithfully recreated btit too lightweight. Glasgow: Odeon. Just when you were sick of the very sight of the word ‘slackcr'. along comes Clerks and gives the whole commercialisation of the Gen X lifestyle a good hard kick tip the

This misbegotten morass of half-baked ideas. crass miscalculation and sheer stupidity is an awful warning to those who tliotiglit Michael Crichton (whose source novel is the only 'star‘ on offer) could do no wrong. There's a talking gorilla. a ring whose design leads the way to ajungle diamond mine. killer primates and a volcanic earthquake for a finale. but none of it works for a moment. See review. In this fascinating and personal film. long-time friend Zwigoff tries to explain the cartoonist's disturbing output. finding a casual connection between childhood. madness and creativity. btit skimming over legitimate concern at his portrayal of women. A feature-length horror movie derived from the HBO cable series 'Iales I’roin The Crypt (itself based on the li.(‘. Comics from the 50s). this finds fugitive Sadler and assorted llophouse inmates under siege from The Collector (Zane). Spike Lee cinematographer Dickerson displays a reasonable flair for the genre. btit the action is predictable. the sfx merely adequate and the fright quotient far too low. Central: Allanpark.

I Destiny Turns On The Radio t 15) (Jack Baton. US. 1995) Dylan McDermott. Nancy Travis. Quentin Tarantino. 110 mins. An escaped con comes back to his Las Vegas home to reclaim his girl and his money. only to discover that he's lost the former to a club owner and the latter to a Fate-like figure. played by 'I'arantino. An errrbarrassrrrent for all involved. with ridiculotrs pseudo-New Age mystical lines. There's only one reason that this even got a release. so anyone suffering from bouts of Tarantino fatigue need not apply. Edinburgh: UCI.

I Disclosure ( 18) (Barry Levinson. US. 199-!) Michael Douglas. Derni Moore. Donald Sutherland. 128 mins. High-flying computer hardware exec Douglas is beaten to promotion by former flame Moore. whose subseqtrent attempts to get his pants off brings about allegations of sexual harassment. The spark point in Michael Crichton's source novel is only one factor in this corporate suspense thriller. which is as slick. professional and empty of sure-footed morality as you would expect. That said. you'll stay glued to the screen. Glasgow: GFT.

I Dumb And Dumber ( 12) (Peter Farrelly. US. 1994) Jim Carrey. Jeff Daniels. Lauren Holly. 102 mins. Brainless limo driver Lloyd (Caney) drags equally intellectually challenged roommate llarry (Daniels) to Aspen in search of the beautiful Mary. not knowing the suitcase he's can‘ying contains the ransom for her husband's kidnappers. There's nothing patronising about these guy's sheer stupidity - this is aimless. ptrerile. shamefacedly hilarious stuff for people who didn't understand the jokes in ll'ayne's World. Glasgow: Odeon. I Easy Rider (18) (Dennis Hopper. US. 1969)

Peter Fonda. Dennis Hopper. Jack Nicholson. 9-1 rrrins. Aitless. archetypal road movie in which two dope-loving bikers travel the highways and by-ways of Arrierica. Dated cult attraction with Nicholson stealing the show as a boozy lawyer persuaded tojoin tip for the trip. Glasgow: GFI‘. I Ed Wood (15) (Tim Burton. US. 1994) Johnny Depp. Martin Landau. Patricia Arqtiette. 123 mins. Burton's fondly atmospheric homage to the so-called ‘worst director of all time' is his best film to date. It's more than a biopic pastiche. however: the emotional heart of the filrii is found in the genuiner caring relationship between Wood and the dying. drug-addicted Bela Lugosi (a marvellous Martin Landau). Depp plays Wood as a bundle of energy and innocent romanticism. capturing the spirit of dogged detennination that makes the subject such an appealing character. Edinburgh: Cameo. A brooding set of troubled souls w ho collect in a strip club are linked by a dark event in their pasts. ln away. ligoyan's film. despite its setting. isn't about sex at all. It certainly doesn't allow the viewer to escape into fantasy. instead focusing on how these traumatised individuals cope with their personal sense of loss.
