I Miami Rhapsody ( 15) (David Frankel. US. 1995) Sarah Jessica Parker. Antonio Banderas. Mia Farrow. 97 mins. It's not often that Hollywood manages to pull off a romantic comedy that comes at you consistently from a woman's point of view. Aspiring comedy writer Gwen decides to settle down and get married. only to discover that all of her family are having affairs. Despite this rather different approach to romance. the tone isn't necessarily cynical. more open and honest for the 90s. See preview. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I Mr: Dotrottire (PG) (Chris Columbus. US. 1993) Robin Williams. Sally Field. Pierce Brosnan. 125 mins. Separated from his wife and kids. out-of-work voice actor Daniel Hillard (Williams) dons make-up and body-padding to become a sexagenarian nanny. Another top- notch comic performance by Williams. who makes the most of his split personality zest without becoming overly sentimental. A lusty. lively version of Shakespeare's comedy of love and deceit. set in the sun-drenched Tuscan hills. Ugly duckling Muriel decides to leave behind her bon'ng life in Porpoise Spit and search for her Prince Charming in the big lights of Sydney. A bouncy Abba soundtrack and fairy tale ambiance add to the charm of one of the year's best crowd-pleasers. As sparkling. in its own way. as The Adventures Of Priscilla. General release.

I Mutiny On The Bounty (PG) (Frank Lloyd. US. 1935) Charles Laughton. Clark Gable. Franchot Tone. 132 mins. Laughton was made to be the tyrannical Captain Bligh. Gable is perfect as the charismatic mate who turns against him and leads the mutiny. An Oscar winner. a great adventure and a wonderful piece of storytelling. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I My Own Private Idaho (18) (Gus Van Sant. US. 1991) River Phoenix. Keanu Reeves. William Richert. 105 mins. Shakespeare's Henry IV Parts l mu! 2 are given a sleazy. contemporary twist in Van Sant's follow-up to the admirable Drugstore Cowboy. Screen heart- throbs Phoenix and Reeves make brave career moves by playing a rent boy and the preppie layabout object of his affections. but to good effect. I ttattnt Born Killers ( 18) (Oliver Stone. US. 1994) Woody Han‘elson. Juliette Lewis. Robert Downey Jr. 119 mins. Stone's visual and aural assault makes for one of the most remarkable cinematic experiences in years; his attempts to marry style with content. and provide a damning expose of the media adulation of serial killers is less successful. let down by his trademark overstatement. Pretty bad. even in the Ed Wood oeuvre. this one revolves around a conman posing as a medium (Dr Acula!) who unexpectedly revives the corpses of those he‘s supposed to contact. Glasgow: GFT.

I Once Were Warriors (18) (Lee Tamahori. New Zealand. 1993) Rena Owen. Terrnuera Monison. Mamaengaroa Kerr-Bell. 99 mins. Tamahori's feature debut is a gritty Loach-style look at domestic violence and disenfranchisement within Auckland's Maori underclass. It's a film about survival of individuals. of families. and of race. It's also an uncompromising. shocking film that doesn't sensationalise its material. Central: MacRobert.

McLean's first feature boasts sheer visual assurance. The frlrii follows its main character through troubled childhood. hustling teenage years and anguished maturity in an American landscape pitched somewhere between Kerouac and Gus Van Saut. Culkin is more confident and appealing than in his sortie of his other work. but it's Hyde's sarcastic butler who brings a better comic touch to the proceedings. General release.

When he is betrayed by the Marquis of MontrOse (John Hurt) and a maliciously psychopathic Englishman (Roth). Rob Roy MacGregor is determined to win back the honour of his name. Alan Sharp's script is rich. witty and literate: Caton-Jones's direction injects a little action. btit doesn't pander to Hollywood; and all the performances are wonderful. A stirring epic which refuses to compromise. making it one of the best films about Scotland and the Scottish psyche ever made. General release.

A contrived plot brings together Captains l’icar'd and Kirk in order to save millions of lives at the hands of the demented McDowell. 1:012:61 the time warp tosh and cringing references to the joys of the family: enjoy instead the self referential jokes of the seventh Trekkie movie which clearly shows that the New Generation crowd make for better sci-fi than the original pantomime tearr). Seems like it. particularly when ligyptologist Spade): solves the key to a huge engraved circle found at the pyramids and unlocks a doorway to another planet. Along with a military team led by Russell. he encounters totalitarian space god Ra (Davidson) and reverses l'S foreign policy by helping the locals.
