You probably don’t give a flying puck about ten men skating against each other ior three twenty minute periods. However, ten years ago Scottish teams ruled the British ice hockey scene, with teams like the Dundee Rockets and the Murrayiield Racers wiping the ice with all challengers. Sadly all that is in the past. Dundee now longer has an ice rink and Murrayiield has never quite been able to compete with Hibs, Hearts and the rugby squad tor the capital’s aiiections. Scotland now only has one team leit in the Premier Division, Kirkcaldy’s Fiie Flyers. Frank Dempster, the President oi the Scottish Ice Hockey Association bemoans the Scottish dilemma.

‘Rinks are in decline as council iacilities and some have been closed down because they are a drain on resources. The good news is that there are pockets oi development in Aberdeen and Paisley, but ior kids in Dundee, Perth and Glenrothes only the really dedicated continue. What we badly need up here is at least a couple oi new rinks in Scotland to progress.’

Dempster is hoping that Sky TV’s coverage deal oi the ice hockey premiership will spark oii a wave oi interest and investment as has been

the case in England. In Manchester a new 16,000 seater rink has been opened and Newcastle United Football Club bought over the Durham Wasps with the hope oi annexing them to St James Park. Dempster, however, is all too aware that a lack oi adequate resources in Scotland means that we will lose our best players, like Edinburgh's Tony Hand, to richer clubs irom the south.

‘A lot oi clubs have had the heart knocked out oi them in the last ten years. All these new English teams have sprung up without development programmes. They see these young guys in places like Dundee without a rink so they say come and play ior us, we’ll pay you to play proiessional ice hockey. All the work on those kids is gone and we never reap the beneiits.’ (Philip Dorward)
