The Lothian European Lectures 1995—96

Special Relationships

The Lothian European Lectures enters its fourth series with an international assembly ofspeakers talking about 'Special Relationships'. Set up in 1992 to mark the Summit Meeting ofthe European Council ofMinisters in Edinburgh by providing a platform for some notable speakers on Europe, the series has grown, attracting distinguished commentators such as Sir Edward Heath, President Gorbachev and Deputy President de Klerk.

'Special Relationships' will expand on the discussion ofthe changing patterns ofintemational co-operation and contacts which enable the European Union to develop its role on the world stage. At the core ofthe series will be an explora- tion ofthe historic 'special relationship' between the United Kingdom and the United States. Speakers drawn from academic, political and cultural backgrounds will examine ways forward in an increasingly united Europe with topics ranging from European communications structures to the role ofthe media in interpreting European affairs and personal experience of European history.
