DECADE or [miles

The Venue in Edinburgh has been running live music and club nights tor the last ten years and it’s set to take things to another level - literally. A third floor is to be added to the club to coincide with the tenth year celebrations propelling The Venue into a new league as the largest club space in the city, with a capacity oi over 1000.

Ever since the legendary Chocolate City turned Edinburgh’s student population onto the seductive allure oi rare groove and 70s iunk, The Venue has played a crucial role in the city’s club-lite. And while it may not be the most glamorous club venue, it has played host to some oi the most respected nights in the country. Best known ior its weekly techno night Pure (now six years old), The Venue also kickstarted the Acid Jazz scene in Edinburgh with Arch and provided an early hip hop night with The Big Payback, while The Blue Room downstairs in The Cooler catered tor the city’s ambient-heads and Street Knowledge paved the way tor the current crop oi jungle nights. At the other end oi the clubbing market, The Venue is still home tor another two at Edinburgh’s longest-running nights, the sen-explanatory Disco Inferno and the truly underground, no compromise American house at Tribal Funktion.

And it doesn’t stop at club nights,

Venue veterans The Stone Roses

The Venue has also welcomed a weird and wonderiul array oi bands into its midst, including the likes oi The Stone Roses, The Happy Mondays, Primal Scream and more recently Airika

Bambaataa. . Not bad tor a venue that is criticised

in some clubbing circles ior being a bit oi a dump. But, as Promotions Manager George 0uttin explains: ‘The Venue is about hearing and dancing to good music. It you want to pose about then go somewhere else.’ (Jim Byers)

The third floor of The Venue will be open from Thurs 27 June. See Club listings for further details.
