CLUBS LISTINGS

liory Weller checks the teat: on this issue’s top ntuslc-ntaiter.

I Name Felix Da Housecat.

' I Age 24.

I Place of origin Chicago.

I Occupation Producer and DJ.

I What kind of name is that for a grown man? A highly litigious one for starters. The company who own the rights to the cartoon character have been getting upset for the last couple of years. but they’re serious now, forcing him to use his real name of Felix Stollings Jr and his pseudonym Aphrohead for his production work.

I How did he get started in the studio? He began by doing keyboards for DJ Pierre (Strictly Rhythm) in 199land then went on to make tracks of his own for Strictly and Djax.

I What happened then? Finding the house scene flagging in Chicago. he moved out to New York and did ‘The Housecat Experience‘ for Strictly Rhythm and worked with Roy Davis Jr (Phuture) on Nervous Records.

I Europe obviously beckoned DJ Pierre paid for his flight over to England with him where Felix did ‘The Dawn‘ for Guerrilla Records. ‘Thee Mad Cat Courtship’ came out on Distraction and he went on a DJing tour with Farley Jackmaster Funk. He also did a track for Glasgow‘s Soma and one for Dave Clarke's Bush Records: ‘The Light‘ as Aphrohead in 1993. This track was one of the first to cross-over between the American techno and house styles.

I So the next step was his own label, right? Right. A year later he set up his ‘Radikal Fear’ label to push the Chicago style. He now has two new labels underway: Clashback and Clashback Trax.

I What about the Ming though? He‘s been DJing since 1992. originally playing wild pitch hypnotic American grooves. Now he plays two sets: the original set. plus a hard Detroit techno one.

I Wasn't be supposed to 0.! here recently? Yup. According to his manager, he didn‘t show up because of plane panic problem. Soon after taking off. one of the engines on his plane developed a fault and the flight was aborted and had to land so it could be fixed. Felix had decided he definitely wasn't going to fly on this plane and demanded to be let off, but the airline wouldn't let him. So. he called his girlfriend on his mobile who had to get the police to let him off the flight.

Felix Da Housecat DJ: at Cool Lemon on Sat I 5 June.
