The brilliant Cuban pianist was not heard to best effect on his only previous Glasgow gig. but his festival debut with his own kicking Cuban outfit should be just the stage he needs. Latin fans can hear all three of tonight‘s events (viz. this. Fourth World and the Latin Club) fora combined special ticket price of £18 (£16).

I Blues Masters - Homesick James and iloneyboy Edwards The Brewhouse. 9pm. £7. The veteran bluesmen struggled to be heard over the noise the capacity crowd made last year. it may now be titne to give the blues element of the festival a fair crack of the whip. with proper concert settings for the bigger names at least. and preferably the acoustic artists as well. I DAVE Q’lilGGlilS: Saxophonist Dave O’Higgins is no stranger to Glasgow, or to the festival. lie appears twice this year, once on the opening night as a member of Martin Taylor’s Spirit of ojango (in an enticing double bill with singer Claire Martin at the McEwan’s Old Fruitmarket), and again with his own quartet in the Intercity Cafe Bar series. Since parting company with both iusion outfit Roadside Picnic and his previous record label, O’Higgins has out three albums in a more straight-ahead jazz style for the enterprising EFZ label, and continues to mature as a musician with every release. intercity Cale Bar, Fri 5, 10pm.

I Jean ‘I’oussaint Quintet Intercity Cafe Bar. lOpm. £6. The London-based American saxophonist is steeped in the hop tradition. and leads a band featuring guitarist Tony Remy and pianist Steve Hamilton. who seems to be on just about every second gig this year.
