.Ilni Byers gets the lowdown on this tortnlght’s or or choice.

I llama Ashley Beedle. Also known as Disco Evangelist. Delta House Of Funk. East Village Loft Society. Ballistic Brothers. The Eccentric Afros. Urban Bushman, X-Press 2 and Black Science Orchestra.

I Occupation Probably one of the busiest DJs/producers/remixers in the business.

I Home Original London wideboy. I So what’s all the fuss about? He's just released Black Science Orchestra‘s first alhurn: one of the finest records of the year. if not the decade.

I That’s what they all say No seriously. it's a modern classic. It's a tribute to the late great Walter Gibbons. without whom we would never have had the first commercially-released 12in (‘ l0 Percent‘ by Double Exposure).

I So why’s It so good? It contains the finest elements of the black dance music spectrum. from jazz and funk to disco and house. but more importantly it‘s got soul.

I And? Well. bearing in mind that soul is the key element running through all forms of black dance music. then Mr Beedle has got more soul than all the DJs in this country put together and then some.

I So he’s a soul N then? Well. no not really. but he certainly knows the difference between cheesy commercial house and real underground dance music so much so that he‘s prepared to light for what he believes in.

I Eh? Well, get this. Beedle was DJing at a club recently doing his usual soulful set when a punter starts asking him to play ‘Children' by Robert Miles. but being a man of taste. Beedle politely says no. and carries on with what he‘s doing. Anyway. the guy keeps bugging him until Beedle finally gets angry and tells him to piss off. Next thing he knows the punter's pushing him about. Beedle finally snaps. turns round and decks him.

I So, apart hora punching people, what else Is he up to? He recently set up his own label. Afro An to concentrate on all types of quality black dance music and he‘s still DJing at clubs across the country from lnverness to Brighton.

Ashley Beedle DJ: at Colours. Edinburgh. Sui I3 Jul.
