HIGH SOCIETY

Seen at Palace Theatre, Manchester; plays King’s Theatre, Edinburgh, Mon 29 July-Sat 10 August; King ’s Theatre, Glasgow, Mon 12-Sat 17 August. Billed as the ‘champagne musical’, Cole Porter’s lligh Society first

lligh Society: ‘a slick and assured affair’

appeared as a serviceany agreeable cinematic romp starring Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly. A tale ot misunderstanding piled upon misunderstanding at the build-up surrounding a well-to-do wedding, it converts to an enjoyable stage musical. Simon Phillips’

production brings out the farce but - presumably aware that most punters will be drawn more for the music than the story - still manages to emphasise Cole Porter’s timelessly effective numbers, from ‘l’ve Got You Under My Skin’, to the zenith of the proceedings, ‘What A Swell Party This Is (Well, Bid You Evah?)’.

Tracy lord (played by Tracey Childs) is a cold and spoilt society queen with all the passion of a traffic warden with a hangover. About to marry for the second time, she fails to notice that her intended, George (liory Campbell), is as unsuitable a partner as her first husband, the pretentious Dexter (Michael llowe). When Dexter

turns up at the pre-wedding preparations, along with a couple of sleazy hacks covering the affair for Spy magazine all three with nefarious intent - the ensuing comedy of errors guarantees that it detinitely won’t be all right on the night.

The ensemble cast of family members punctuate the proceedings with gusto, although Roland Curram’s whisky-sodden protrayal of Willie is a tad over the top. At the other end of the age scale, Kerris Peeling carves out a promising niche for herself as the precocious Caroline.

A slick and assured affair replete with quite gorgeous frocks and an ingenious wedding cake-style set, High Society hits most of the right notes most of the time. Rousineg performed by all, the production proves that a good tune is always a good tune. And played as enthusiastically as they are by the six- piece band, they really are the stars of the show. (Mike Barnett)
