liory vleller discovers how or became one or the world’s torernost dance innovators.

llatne Brian Transeau. or BT as he prefers to be called.

25. Place of birth Maryland. Occupation Producer and piano- playing. guitar-wielding performer. What, you mean he plays Instruments? BT is a consumate performer who studied at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. Crikey, I bet they were none too keen on his dance music ideas there Exactly. He'd play his friends acid-style tracks he was working on and they didn't understand. saying it was just too simple. It was only after hearing Brian Eno say to play 'loads of crazy chord progressions and go nowhere‘ that he had the courage to make dance music. So does he lack in all that classical malerkey and make for dancetloor stardom? Not exactly. While hanging out in a Boston music store he joins in the harmonics of a Marvin Gaye song with a guy trying out a keyboard. The guy turns out to be record producer Maurice Starr. who asks him to join him and some raw talent in the studio. The 'talent' is the embryonic New Kids On The Block. He gets out quickly and dutifully finishes off his college course. What does he do next? After leaving Berklee. he still can't find anyone who likes the music he’s making so he moves to Washington DC and sets up his own record label. Deep Dish. I And people like this? Quite a lot. especially UK producer and DJ god Sasha who got him over from America. introduced him to British clubbing and chemical highs. Out of this came the dancefloor classic ‘Embracing The Sunshine‘. Sasha surprised BT by playing an acetate of it during his set at ‘Babelicious‘. The crowd loved it and BT was nearly in tears at the reaction. ‘I was off my face ’cos I‘d had cider for the first time.’ BT’s album lma is out now and his new single ‘Blue Skies. Divinity Tim featuring Tori Amos is released shortly.
