llory Weller gets the lowdown on lle and producers Daft Punk, hailed by The Chemical Brothers.

llama Daft Punk. aka Thomas Bengalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo.

Age 2] and 20 respectively.

llorne Paris.

Occupation Producers. rernixers. DJs and the next big thing.

How so? They‘ve had considerable success in the underground with their own brand of disco-tinged. hard rockin' acid house and are about to finalise a deal with a major label to release their first album. How do you measure success to the underground? One of their singles last year. ‘Da Funk‘, appeared in everyone’s charts, including a fifth place ranking in Mix-mag's records of 95. The Chemical Brothers love them and got them to remix ‘Life Is Sweet‘ and to tour with them. Kudosarama or what?

llow dltl they reach this exalted position? They started out in what they describe as a ’dodgy rock band‘ called Darlin'. which got appalling reviews in Melody Maker branding their music ‘daft punk’.

is that why they got out of the genre? They became disillusioned with guitar music as they didn't think anyone danced enough. so naturally they got into dance music. forming a techno outfit. ironically using the description from the review.

With this kind of history how did they get their first record deal? They met the Slam guys at a rave in Eurodisney and slipped them a tape. Slam signed them for their Soma label and went on to release three singles: ‘Alive'. ‘Da Funk', and ‘lndo Silver Club’. A series of live gigs starting with in The City (Manchester) two years ago introduced them to the UK. Anything else we should know about the-7 If you’re interested. Thomas’s dad was apparently in Ottawan of ‘D.l.S.C.O‘ fame. (Rory Weller)
