Glasgow and Edinburgh’s club scene is bursting with an extraordinary number of talented DJs, producers, remixers and musicians. Here are some of the names we predict will go ballistic in 1997.

CRAIG SMITH

STYLE Garage and ‘real‘ house.

HISTORY Smith was previously involved in Edinburgh's hip hop scene. including work with Suga Bullit and Under The Influence. and is resident at Solefusion. Scotland’s only regular garage night. His first track. El Gordo’s ‘Casa Del Fonk‘. was followed by ‘Closer To The Source‘, (both on In Demand Records). He had his first big guest spot at Lecds’s BackZBasics last year.

PRESENT He is being hyped by certain DJs (including Dave Camacho and Kerri Chandler) as the ‘next big thing‘. His third track. ‘Closer To The Source Part 2’ (In Demand). is out now.

IN THE PIPELINE Astute promotion has provided gigs at London’s Garage City. a Phuture Trax party and another date at BackZBasics.

HYPE Irvine Welsh says his three favourite artists are Goldie. Leftficld and . . . Craig Smith. Apparently he wants Smith’s latest track on the soundtrack of his next film.

KMC

KMG, AKA KEITH MOKNIGHT

STYLE KMC’s musical style is deep and mystical drum and bass. HISTORY His first track. ‘Polaris‘. released on Timeless Records has been championed by the drum and bass cognoscenti. As a DJ he has played at the best club nights: Metalheadz. Logical Progression. Speed and On It. He recently completed an extensive American east coast tour.

PRESENT He runs the Timeless nights at Glasgow‘s Sub Club and is resident at On It in Middlesbrough. both once a month. He also works in the Rub a Dub music shop in Glasgow.

IN THE PIPELINE Two remixes are out this month, one for Glasgow‘s Temple Music and the other for Timeless Records.

STYLE Quality techno. HISTORY Edinburgh’s techno trio have recorded for some of the world’s most respected techno labels including Tresor. D-Jax. Peacefrog, Harthouse and Mosquito. plus local imprints Sativae. Soma, Drought. Scandanavia and T&B. Landstruum has played Europe, America. South Africa and Japan; Schmidt recently played at Sativae nights in Munich. Stuttgart and Marseille. PRESENT Brown is working on tracks for D-Jax, Soma. and Derrick May’s new label. Fragile. - His debut album will be out soon. Landstruum is living in New York promoting his Scandanavia label; Schmidt is on holiday in Africa. _ t I _ .
