Red Cell revolves around three 015: Mark Ryal, one of the new breed of pioneering DJs; Pure's Twitch; and Dominic from the Subbie's Saturday nights, who is also a producer with Ralph Lawson's 20:20 record label. Together they play a mix of deep house, techno, drum 'n' bass and electronica. Basically just underground cutting-edge dance music. Quite a show for a Thursday night.

of person who can take the whole of Friday morning off, thus many cheap drink, cheap tune nights take Thursdays as their own. Red Cell however, has managed to succeed despite, and most probably because it plays such an uncompromising musical style. In the words of Mark Ryal: 'We often take it quite deep and nasty'.

Any other relations? The same outfit also runs the Sunday club Aquaplanet at the Sub Club, a lighter mix and more of a party night than the educational Red Cell. Curiously, they ran the Thursday night called UK Gold at the Sub Club which immediately preceded this one. Why the different name? The change came with an alteration in the DJ lineup and a new musical direction. ‘Fresher new angles and more serious music,’ say Red Cell. In future the music is going to get even deeper.

Is this the club that's in the news for being supported by the Labour Party? Up to a point. Red Cell, in fact, claims that it is supporting Labour - not the other way round. One of the reasons for the name of the club was its socialist stance, and while superclubs like the Ministry Of Sound are involved in getting young people to vote, Red Cell say they are encouraging people to use their vote wisely. Red Cell celebrates its first birthday on Thurs 13 Mar.
