Thom Dibdin talks beats with one of the busiest DJs in the world.

'5 t‘; v Name Tony De Vit.

Occupation Top ranking DJ and, with recording partner Simon Parkes, one half of the V2 remix team.

Another celebrity then? Too right! De W is so popular that he is resident at two clubs: Birmingham’s ultra~ glamorous Miss Moneypenny‘s and London's den of dancefloor hedonism, Trade. He has DJed all over the world and his Easter Weekend itinerary this year included two clubs on Ash Wednesday, two on Maundy Thursday, three on Good Friday, five on Easter Saturday and two on Easter Sunday. Busy boy! But what makes him so popular? His ability to get behind the decks and turn a mundane night into a truly happening event. What style of music does he play? On Miss Moneypenny's new mix CD Glamorous One it's up-front, pumping house. Mi'xmag described his Trade sets as 'Campcore' a mixture of hardcore and camp sounds. The man himself says: ’Whether it's the slower, housier, dubby beats or harder, faster techno, it's still the nice, chunky hard beats that I really like.’

Hardcore? Nothing with soul or funk that makes you want to shake your booty, then? ‘That’s a load of rubbish,’ says De Vit. 'If anything, it [hardcore] has a lot more. A lot of people don't give it a chance because it is very demanding music. There’s no two ways with harder, faster techno. You have to want to go out and get lost in the mUSlC. If you’re not prepared to do that, then don’t bother.‘

And the camp side? ’Gay clubs are my background,’ he says. ’When I first started DJing, gay clubs were gay clubs, straight clubs were straight clubs and they didn't mix. In the house clubs now, the young gay people are in there, mixmg with straight people like it’s never happened befOre. I would love to feel that I have been part of gay people being accepted into mainstream clubs and vice versa.’
