RUGBY

SRU Tennents Cup Final Edinburgh: Murrayfield, Sat 10 May.

Though hardly ranking with the garishness of the Channel 5 or Irn Bru taxi ads making their way across the cities of the nation, you may have spotted the odd bus or two going by with five blokes staring down at you menacingly through their shades. No, they're not advertising cinematic gangland slayings but the ’ruckfest' known as the SRU Tennents Cup Final at Murrayfield. And this year, there is an assorted array of entertainment before the big event gets rolling - the match between Boroughmuir and

Melrose.

A tenner gets you seats for three games of rugby the Shield, Bowl and SRU Tennents Finals live music, roving entertainers, merchandise stalls, face painters and the like. Worried about what on earth to do with the kids while you’re relishing the lineouts and scrums? Fear not, as there is a creche and a kids’ fun zone for the scamps to roam around in.

Once the RAF Falcons have delivered the match ball, the two finalists for the big prize will be kicking off at 3pm, with Boroughmuir and Melrose getting there after convincing victories in the semi's. Meggetland witnessed Muir’s 45-0 demolition job over the hapless Heriot’s, largely orchestrated by Dougie Wyllie and Sean Lineen, while Melrose kept their charge for the League and Cup double alive after an overly physical battle with Kirkcaldy.

Whatever happens on the pitch, the SRU appears to have realised, perhaps on the back of the Claymores’ success, that the sport can no longer be just a game in this corporate age but an essential part of the entertainment

industry. (Brian Donaldson)
