Margarers Museum is set in the late l9-l()s in a windswept and isolated corner of Nova Scotia. where Bonhatn Carter's feisty woman makes her lover promise not to work down the mines that killed her father and brother. What unfolds is a kind of Iife-in-a-day between the blades of grass in an overgrown meadow. 'I'hat's not to dismiss the ﬁlm’s central argument ~ that the right of free speech is absolute — but it is Courtney Love as l‘lynt‘s junkie wife Althea that you won‘t be able to take your eyes off. The Portrait Of A Lady ( l2) (Jane Campion. (ES. I996) Nicole Kidman. John Malkovich. Barbara Hershey. l44 mins. Campion's follow-up to The l’itum is a dark
and difﬁcult adaptation of Henry James's novel which stays true to the original‘s subtle psychological observations. Kidman — at once proud. naive. sensitive and determined - is excellent as the young woman almost destroyed by a disastrous marriage. while Malkovich is a little too cold and ambiguous. Much tnore ambitious than Reservoir Dogs. the most awaited second feature of the 90s has many scenes that crackle with Tarantino wit. and a few others that fall flat as the writer- tlirector bravely experiments. Interlocking stories in the pulp crime manner concern hitrnen. ailing boxers. gang bosses and their molls. drttg fiends. and assorted riff-raff. The Relic (l8) (Peter Hyams. US. I996) Tom Sizemore. Penelope Ann Miller. Linda Hunt. 109 mins. Never more than functional. but never less than mindlessly enjoyable. this surprisingly nasty horror movie blends elements of the haunted house. serial killer and monster mayhem sub-genres as a mythical beast with enhanced DNA rotnps around a New York museum. Miller has the depth and presence to convince us she's smart enough to survive this night of terror. while Sizemore carries off his first leading man role with confidence. See review. I32 mins. l-‘amily relationships are neatly tied up in the final part of George Lucas‘s original Star llitrs trilogy. while the matinee-style action quota is kept high as the forces ofevil are vanquished at last. This is much tnore of a kids ﬁlm than the others — as evinced in the cutesy liwoks — bttt the final confrontation between Luke and Darth Vader has more emotional impact than anything else in the series. A young engineer travels to the court of Louis XVI to secure funding for a drainage project and discovers a cruel society where savage wit can open doors or slain them in your face. Verbal duels give the ﬁlm a literate spark. and the portrait of a decadent world manages to achieve several contemporary parallels. A costume drama with depth beneath the costumes. Iidinburgh: Cameo. 'I‘he .S‘triti/y Bill/mom director's treatment of the Shakespeare tragedy is a magniﬁcent riot of colour. action and sexy teen romance. without any need to sacrifice the text. To call it ‘M'I‘V filtnmaking' misses the point that the camera tricks and iii-jokes don't in arty way distract from the fact that I.uhrmann has completely grasped the issues at the centre of the play. An intoxicating. breathtaking mix of Catholic iconography. high camp and street violence that‘s both deliciously feverish and stttdiedly cool. General release.
