Name? Joey Beltram, 183 or Joseph Beltram II) to give his full name.

Origin Queens, New York.

Age 26.

Occupation DJ and hard funky techno producer. One of the second wave of techno producers who took the initial sound and added their own flavour. He's also a reformed graffiti artist.

So he did a bit of scrawling on toilet walls? No, this was the real shit. Whole trains from top to bottom, inside and out, sneaking into train yards in the dead of night to 'bomb' the trains with high art street style.

So when did he start getting into making music? At seventeen he began hearing the music being made in New York, Tony Humphries’ radio shows and the early work of Todd Terry mixed in with the music coming out of Chicago. He liked it but figured he could do better and quickly got into producing. Did people go for what he was doing? No, he had a hard slog of it until he wandered into the offices of Nu Groove who put out his 'Vortex’ and ‘The Trance‘ tracks. These tracks were then licensed to European label R&S who brought his distinctive sound to a new and receptive audience. in 1991 R&S released his 'Energy Flash' and ‘Mentasm' tracks which are regarded as highly influential in both techno and jungle scenes.

Does he still get about with his spray can? He's put the lid on that one for a while, but for the shooting of last year's 'Forklift' single he got together with old mates to do a bit of legit decorating. His graffiti days also come through in the titles of the tracks he makes with names like ‘Floaters', 'Set Ups’ and 'Metro’. Joey Beltram 015 at Tin Pan Alley, Fri 30 May.
