A legend in Scottish clubbing, The Sub Club ls about to get even bigger. with an extra room opening.

Harri The Sub Club’s resident DJ

Name The Sub Club.

Age Eleven.

Occupation Seminal Scottish club venue.

Appearance Shut until June 14.

Ah, that'll be why I didn't get in last weekend. I thought the stewards were just being ultra zealous with the door policy, Yup, the Sub closed for ten days at the beginning of June to undergo an extensive refit.

A lick of paint and fixing the locks on the toilet doors? No way, this is the real deal. New ceilings, floors, walls, bars, lights and a whole new room.

Why are they doing all this? The

; Subbie was starting to look a little rough ] around the edges and the basic club hasn't really changed much in ten years. 3 Leaving your shoes behind stuck to a

l carpet of chewing gum was not

! uncommon, and there was no-where

l

l

really to escape from the furious shape throwmg if you wanted a bit of a break. Where are they managing to find the

new room from? The space behind the

bottom bar, where you put your coats,

; is actually pretty big. There's enough

2 space for a decent sized chill-out room

: and a new bar. The music in the back

room will complement what’s going on

out front, with a laid-back mix of dub,

l reggae and hip hop.

; But will it be the same Sub Club in

l spirit. you know, fixing something that

l isn‘t broken? Saturday night resident DJ

3 Harri has the answer for that one: ’It's

been long overdue. The whole place

was looking pretty boggin' and was

i even getting left behind in terms of

9 looks by the student unions. Some

f peOple say it shouldn‘t have been done,

but it’s like when Bob Dylan played his

first electric set. It’s still the Sub Club

though and it’s being in a basement and the low roof that really makes for the

atmOSphere.'

; Anything else? The whole front

; entrance to the club is different, doing

j away with the peephole entry system.

Generally they're trying to make the

5 club more accessible and not so

3 intimidating, getting away from the

j regulars-only image that so many

'3 people associate with the club.

(Rory Weller)

; The new look Sub Club Opens to the

l public on 14 jun with a guest appearance by Rocky, Diesel and Ashley Beedle. See listings.
