irony. A tough task, some might say, but then Barker is slim, witty and has a highly developed sense of irony which he uses to highlight the cultural differences between us and them. Being an outsider in Britain, he is also much better placed to pinpoint British absurdities than the natives, and he tackles the job with devastating accuracy and more than a little panache. Go see or everyone else will laugh at you. (Jonathan Trew)

COMEDY REVIEW Ian Stone - A Bit Of Didley
Squat

Gentle comedy is a relatively rare beast on the stand-up circuit, but Ian Stone is one such animal. Using a brand of humour that is warm and inclusive rather than confrontational or belligerent, Stone meanders through a few anecdotes and shares a handful of sharp observations on his Jewish religion. His material is a little bit hit and miss, provoking a series of chuckles instead of sustained howling. When Stone sticks to his routine he hits target but when the ad-libbing starts the laughter tends to stop. (Jonathan Trew)

Obviously he was struggling with early-festival audience apathy in this small Grassmarket pub venue, and it also looks like his delivery Wlll improve (fewer pauses would be good, and more precision with his punch-lines). But much of his observational material was simply very tired: yes, we do all know how tempting your bed is on Monday morning — but it’s not very funny.
