In keeping with Glasgow's long standing relationship with Detroit, the city is set to stage what’s shaping up to be one of those all- time great nights. Aquaplanet, the Sub Club's weekly Sunday nighter, will host an In The City special, featuring the combined talents of Detroit stars Derrick May, Blake Baxter and Claude Young. Baxter and Young will play full live sets, with Young possibly previewing new material, while May will be DJing for two hours.

No wonder then that Aquaplanet promoter Paul Fegan is excited. 'These three guys are the best in the world at what they do,’ he enthuses. 'You're not gonna get another chance like this again to see them all together in a small club. It doesn’t get much better than this.’

Baxter and May represent Detroit’s old school. Between them, they can count over twenty years involvement in the international arena of dance music. Young meanwhile, is leader of Detroit’s new school, a future legend in the

making, renowned for his fresh, innovative approach to DJing and producing. Hearing one of them play is an experience in itself, but to have all three on one night is a privilege. ln footballing terms, it's like having George Best. Bobby Charlton and Ryan Giggs all lining up in the same Manchester United team - and playing at Tynecastle.

For Aquaplanet - and for Glasgow in general - it is yet another step into a world where pride and passion in quality music is everything. From America‘s 'Motor City’ to Scotland's 'Magic City’, the stripped-down beats. lush grooves and hypnotic melodies of Detroit techno are borne from the same desire to keep the music alive in its funkiest and most soulful electronic incarnation.

This devotion to the music will soon take Fegan - and Aquaplanet DJ Mark Ryal - to Barcelona. 'We've served our apprenticeship in the best club in Britain,’ explains Fegan of his time at the Sub Club. 'Now we just want to take what we've learnt and continue with it somewhere new.’ (Jim Byers)
