No wonder then, that music has been a central force in his life. Besides the lullaby influence, his father was a sometime jazz musician and both his sisters are singers one is rapper Monie Love.

lnspired by the experimental nature of jazz, the teenage Angel indulged in a passion for percussion. A professional drummer at age fourteen, he loved to escape into the freeform possibilities of rhythm. Later, as a producer of jazz inflected, Detroit-

influenced techno, his drum programming would be his trademark. Like his black American jazz musician heroes, Angel used musrc as a means of escape. For him it was a way out of inner city south London he now lives in

suburban Swindon.

He acquired early DJing experience at seminal London pirate Phaze One, working alongside Fabio and Grooverider. The big break came in 1989. Following spells in prison for possession of cannabis, his hardcore version of 'Sweet Dreams‘ by The Eurythmics was picked up by a major label and charted at

Number 23.

His reputation as a hard techno DJ (he used to alter the decks so they’d play at twrce the normal speed) was established at the many European raves he played.

Angel was also beginning to make his own smoother techno sound, which manifested itself in productions for the likes of FNAC, Rising High, Blunted, Apollo and R&S. This refined version of Detroit techno created a tight, funky and jazzy sound that landed him a deal with Island in T995.

He has since released two critically-acclaimed albums: Tales Of The Unexpected and the recent Globetrotting. He is already working on a third With help from a diverse selection of collaborators, including Grooverider, Carl Cox, and Jumpin’

Jack Frost.

'I'm a music lover,' he explains. 'I've got a Wide taste and I‘m wrde open to anything that sounds good. You can't limit yourself to one music. It's always good to exercise your hearing capabihty.’ (Jim Byers)
