Rory Weller spills the beans on this fortnight's dude behind the decks.

., . V. \ D.K

ame Dave C’Iar'T’e.

Age Late twenties.

Occupation Top UK Techno DJ and producer.

Place of origin South coast of England, now lives in Horesham, Sussex (same town as Carl Cox).

Is that the same Dave Clarke your mum asks for at weddings? Depends how up on the techno scene she is, but no relation.

So he's a pretty famous 01 then? One of the biggest, but it's only in the last couple of years that he’s really made his name in the UK, despite being one of the biggest names on the European Circuit.

What changed things then? It was the

release of his immense 'Red 2' track, the

second part in a now completed trilogy, that shot him to fame. Crossing over from techno to house it was played by everyone from Andy Weatherall to Jon

Pleased Wimmin. The track was so good

it moved one DJ to remark: 'Any record played either side of it JUSl sounds crap'. So how long has he been on the scene? He's been Dling for years, but first got into production in 1989, fusing breakbeats with PiL's ’This Is Not A Love Song’ to create the track ’I Like John’. He was then briefly the first British artist to be signed to R&S befOre setting up his own label Magnetic North, an outlet

for Christian Vogel, DJ Hell and Adam X.

In 1993 he hooked up with Bush

records, remixed Aphrohead's ‘Thee Lite'

and then set ab0ut his 'Red Series'.

lle's known for being a bit moody isn't a

he? He’s outspoken, and a bit of a loner,

not mixmg With the DJ crowd and doesn’t ever do drugs. He prefers to spend time With his girlfriend, his dogs, a beer and a good cigar.

What's he up to now? He's just filled in for Annie Nightingale on Radio 1, his 'Shake Your Booty' track was released

mid-September and he's finishing off an

album to be released at the beginning of next year.
