Grandmaster Fish

Name Joseph Saddler aka Grandmaster Flash.

Age 40.

Origin Barbados, although he grew up in the area of the South Bronx (New York) called Throgs Neck.

Didn't we have some reference to him a couple of months back? Yes indeed, way back in September when we spoke

about Melie Mel who was in the Furious

Five, the rap act inextricably linked to Grandmaster Flash.

Let's see if I can remember - seminal rap outfit who recorded ’Whitelines' and 'The Message"! Right again, Flash was the DJ behind the rappers, and his pioneering skills were responsible in no small part for their success.

So he's a bit nifty on the decks? Outrageously so The speed of his spin backs and quick cuts are legendary which is why he’s called ‘Flash'.

How did he get started? He Died at parties about the Bronx, setting up in derelict blocks, ripping the wires out of the street lights and using the municipal power supply to feed the decks and sound system.

Wasn't that a bit dangerous? Flash knows all abdut electronics; his mother made him study the subject as a teenager.

So he ltnow's what's going on inside the mixing desk then? He customises his own equipment, just like when he started, picking up parts from the store, fixing them together with crazy glue and then banging away at the cross fader like a man posessed.

How influential is be? Well, he created the scratch/sample style on ’Adventures on The Wheels of Steel' in 1980, regarded by many as the most important record of the decade, which threw together Chic, Blondie and Queen. Many say he invented rap music (although he doesn't rap).

So where‘s he been for the last dozen or so years? The Furious Five and he split in 83 amid court battles over the name Grandmaster and royalty payments. He tried to reform with the Furious Five in 87 but the results were

just not the same as five years earlier. He

still DJs every week in New York. I Grandmaster Flash 015 at the M60 Urban Carnival, Trash, on 27 Dec.
