Passepartout

Edinburgh, 24 Deanhaugh Street, 332 4476.

Those who didn’t sleep through their French O levels may dimly remember that ’passepartout’ is French for masterkey. ’Access all areas’ might be a better translation for the name of this bijou restaurant since their menu takes its inspiration from all areas of the globe.

Taking Jules Verne's Around The World In 80 Days as a loose theme for the restaurant, chef/owners Mark and Sandra Reid have tastefully styled the basement setting as a railway carriage from the golden era of travel, a time when train journeys were a pleasure rather than a penance.

A typical menu might find Yucatan chicken from Mexico sitting beSide baked red onion with a date stuffing or Catalan duck flavoured With saffron, Cinnamon and pine nuts. The menu changes according to what is available locally from day to day and runs on a set price basis. At dinner two courses cost £12.50, three courses including coffee are £16 and 6—7pm there is an early dinner at £12.50 for three courses.

’lt’s well cooked, well flavoured bistro food,’ is Mark Reid’s description. ’We wanted to provide a set price structure where you know what you’re gomg to spend and know that you are not going to be disappomted Two people Will eat well With a bottle of wine for £40.’

Brunch fans will be interested to learn that Passepartout is planning to open for Sunday brunch from 22 Mar to COinCide With the rugby international. The menu, With an international flavour naturally, is still in progress.

Scottish Absolut Bartenders Club

Congratulations are due to Edinburgh’s City Cafe after their manger Fiona Skouse scooped second prize in the first ever Scottish Absolut Bartenders Club. Thirteen of Scotland’s top barmen and women gathered at Blue in Edinburgh to demonstrate their cocktail skills for a panel of judges.

Skouse impressed the judges With a concoction called Absolut Pear Shaped made from Absolut, Royal Mint Chocolate Liqueur, Lanza pear juice and a splash of NOIIly Prat. Skouse pocketed £100 and a rather fetching stainless steel cocktail shaker in the distinctive shape of an Absolut bottle.

The Absolut Pear Shaped is part of a neW range of cocktails which the City Cafe is developing. ’We wanted to update some of the older classic cocktails,’ explains Skouse.
