in the years immediately following World War II, the Hollywood musical was dominated by MGM, as Gene Kelly sang in the rain and Frank Sinatra went out on the town. But let’s not forget that the first words sung in cinema history came from the mouth of Al Jolson in the Warner Bros sensation The Jazz Singer. It was with Warners that Busby Berkeley created his astonishing synchronised set-pieces of choreography, and this was studio that made a singing star out of Doris Day.
Doris appears in seven of the twelve movies in the Warner Bros Musicals collection. Admittedly, a couple of them don't quite have the same sparkle now as they had in their heyday, but elsewhere her irresistible personality shines through. Her spunky tomboy character was never better than in the singalong classic Calamity Jane.
The real gem in the collection is George Cukor's 1954 version of A Star Is Born (U, 168 mins »- *- ). James Mason plays an alcoholic movie star in career decline, who spots singer Judy Garland and helps turn her into an overnight

sensation. But this is no escapist fantasy: his excessive drinking and subsequent cold-shouldering by the Hollywood establishment leaves no room for sentiment. Somehow the film brings a touch of emotional reality to an essentially frivolous and melodramatic genre, and much of that is down to the sheer power of Garland's performance. (Alan Morrison)
