l Phactfi I e A decade on, here’s the essentials on diicago‘s Phuture 303.

Name Phuture 303.

Age Ten years old.

Place of origin The suburbs of Chicago. Occupation Inventors of acid house. What really? Pretty much so. The original lineup began in l987 with Spanky, DJ Pierre, Herb Jackson and Marshall Jefferson acting as executive producer for Trax Records. Mucking about with a bass machine (Roland TB 303) they didn't know how to work, they pressed all the buttons and came up with Add Trax’.

Has the line-up changed much? Very much so. Spanky is the only original member, with six others coming and going over the last decade.

So why all the changes? DJ Pierre left in 1990 to pursue a solo career after his 'Generator Power' track on Strictly Rhythm. Jackson left around the same time when he got married.

Who else became involved? Roy Davis Jrjoined in 91 for the anti-drugs record 'Rise From Your Grave' and stayed until 96. 'Professor Trax' joined in ’93 and stayed, Skull joined briefly in 96 and then left with Roy Davis Jr in 97 after the two of them had made a track as Phuture Next Generation.

Phew, bit confusing. So who is Phuture 303 now? Basically just Spanky, but it expands to him, Damon ’Professor Trax' Neloms and LA Williams when they tOur live as a band.

What are the classics to listen out for? ’Acid Trax’ (which they never really got paid for), 'We Are Phuture' and 'Slam’. Any relation to the Glasgow Slam? In a way, yes. They got their name from the track and remixed ’We Are Phuture‘ in 96 on a release that also saw CJ Bolland and Joey Beltramgiving their interpetation of 'Slam'.

Are Phuture 303 releasing anything now? A line-up of Spanky, Professor Trax, Roy Davis Jr, DJ Skull and LA Williams made an album called Alpha & Omega which wrll be released later in the year. (Rory Weller)
