The Laughing Bag

They make you laugh - we make them squeal. This issue, Dundonian teacher-turned-comic Joan Broon. Square sausage or round?

Being of the vegetable persuasion, neither. I love and respect animals. But I kicked a sheep up the arse once for standing on my foot.

What's the best discovery ever made in Dundee?

The Readers’ Wives pop beat combo. Wonderful live/karaoke/cabaret four- piece. The lead singer is a bit of all right.

Which pharmaceutical product is under-rated. and why?

Canesten cream. [Me neither male Ed]. Marvellous lubricant.

What title would you give your Eurovision Song Contest entry? 'Mmm . . . let's do it this way'.

Which is your favourite Disney character, and why?

Toss-up between the Pink Ponies in the Beethoven bit of Fantasia or Dumbo's mum. I bubbled. A lot.

Have you ever said ‘I hate you’ and not meant it?

Only to my mum when she’s late with the pocket money.

What's done more for Dundee, pies or fruitcake?

Have you eaten either? Gastronomic disasters, both. To be avoided at all costs. Especially at Tannadice (and the Bovril isn’t pleasant either).

What would be your famous last words?

I think that doughnut was Spiked.

What new post or department would you create for the Scottish parliament? Ministry for up and coming clubbie bands.

Are you related to Hen Broon, at all?

No, but I did snog him on the stairs of 10 Glebe Street once. He also threatened to take me up the but 'n’ ben.

Are you going anywhere exotic on your holidays this year?

Can’t decide between 3 Med cruise or a tent in Balmerino.

What lessons have you learned from being a teacher?

Teaching is the only jOl) where you get paid for talking to yourself. And make sure you wear a bra at all times.

Who'd be the better date - Benjamin Netanyahu or Yasser Arafat?

Yasser, obViously. Great headgear. I could borrow it and wear it to Tannadice. You work with children would you ever work with animals?

I did when l was body double for Free Willy.

What's the worst excuse you’ve ever used?

Get off I’ve got cramp.

What's the best thing about journalists? (Careful)

I come from DC. Thomson’s land so I can't comment. Understandably.

And finally . . .why should we come to The Stand on a Thursday night?

To find out why we’ve done 324 shows without a single cancellation. And to see my sequinned playsun. (Compiled by Andrew Burnet)

I joon Broon is resident compere on Thursday evenings at The Stand Comedy Club, Edinburgh.
