Rory Weller checks out the Austrian duo, Kruder 8: Dorfniei'ster

Name Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister.

Age Knocking on the door of 30.

And they're from where? Vienna. What do they do? The duo produce for their own label G Stone (standing for ‘Grind Stone') as well as the likes of Ninja and Wall of Sound, remix for a whole bunch of people and DJ all round the world.

Who should we file them next to?

Think DJ Krush, DJ Shadow, Howie 8, DJ

Cam or Coldcut.

How long have they been working together They've been mates for ages, both following careers in music, DJing and playing in vaguely hip hop bands: Kruder (Moreaus), Dorfmeister (Sin). They got bored and decided to move into more experimental territory together, setting up studios 6 Stone 1 and 2 at home.

Weren’t these Viennese blokes involved in the whole 'trip hop' thing way back? Surely. The ’High Noon‘ track off the EP '6 Stoned' - which had the pair of them in a Simon and Garfunkel Bookends —- pose is a trip hop seminal classic, don't you know.

But they're not doing this now? No, wisely they got out before the nurdey trip hop virus took hold of them, venturing into jazzy, funky elettronica, dope beats, drum 'n’ bass, that sort of thing.

Who have they remixed? Loads of people, from William Orbit, United Future Organisation and Bomb The Bass to Lamb. tn the case of United Future Organisation, they based a whole track round UFO's Raphael Sebbag leaving a message on their answer machine asking if they could do ‘a tune for us', which they did, calling it unsurprisingly, ‘A Tune For Us‘.

They're pretty well known for their 0/ Kicks mix album, was it something they

were keen to do? Maybe not: the sleeve

notes say they only did it after being presented with ’drugs, money, mo' drugs and mo‘ money, and then some gals and their sisters'. It doesn't say whether they took up the whole offer though.
