Theo Parrish is the man with the "If": , .

Age 25.

Place of residence Detroit.

Occupation Producer, DJ and record manager of Sound Signature records. That's some name And he's some guy. Music has always been a passion for the guy, growing up in Chicago, listening to the likes of Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix and his uncle, the jazz musician Dexter Sims.

When did he start Dling? He started off spinning and producing when he was only thirteen.

So was it music all the way from there on in? In a kind of roundabout way. After graduating from the Chicago Academy for the Arts he received a scholarship to the Kansas City Arts institute where he studied SCUltht'e. And how do we get from sculpture to music? His Bachelor of Fine Arts degree was concentrated in sound sculpture. He‘d take gallery spaces, blindfold people and play live instuments, looped recordings, voices and some other weird shit to create emotion.

Why was he doing this? 'i was letting go of the rules and preconceived concepts,’ he says. Fair enough.

And this is art? Stranger things have 'won the Turner Prize. Parrish says 'All my music is art.’

So should we expect some avant garde tunes going on when he plays? Nah. Alth0ugh he sees Dling as a mix of education and entertainment, he's got a fine choice of fast disco and deep house.

Can we take it from the photo he's not exactly stage struck? When we asked for a picture, he tried to convince us a photo of his feet would be more relevant than his face. ‘t'm not into all that silver glitter gloves and afro wigs,’ says the man Parrish.

What would he prefer? To DJ in a room and watch the crowd through a slit in the wall, he reckons.

l'd love to see that Or not as the case may be. (Rory Weller)

I'Theo Parrish plays at the Sub Club on Sat 1 A09. A mix album is forthcoming on Peacefrog.
