The Thief ( I5) (Pavel Chukhrai. Russia. 1997) Misha Philipchuk. Iikaterina Rednikova. Vladimir Mashkov. 97 mins. On one level. this film is a simple tale portraying the influence of a thief upon a child; but on another level. it is a sophisticated metaphor illustrating the director's experience of Russian politics. Although dark and cold in tone. the film is brightened by its gently comic scenes and the stunningly expressive performance of Philipchuk as Sanya. 'I‘he 'I'hiefis a stimulating movie which is both masterful and moving. See preview and review. Iidinburgh: Iiilmhouse.

Wag The Dog (15) (Barry Levinson. US. 1997) Robert De Niro. Dustin Hoffman. Anne Ileche. 97 mins. A spin doctor cooks 11p a fictitious war to help a US President through a tricky and scandal-filled re- election campaign all done-and-dusted well before Clinton's Monica Lewinsky scandal surfaced. But outside its frighteningly impeccable timing. this Mamet-scripted satire comes in heavy handed form. As one 'problem' after another is encountered and solved. the cool. ironic tone of the opening section is rapidly replaced by one of simple hysteria. Stirling: MacRobert .

Washington Square (PG) (Agnieszka Holland. US. 1998) Jennifer Jason Leigh. Albert I-‘inney. Ben Chaplin. 1|5mins. Throughout her life. Catherine Sloper (Leigh) has tried to win the affection of her stern father (Finney): when impoverished Mom's ’l‘ownsend (Chaplin) comes along. their love leaves her threatened with disinheritance. Holland's film has a style virtually interchangeable with any of the better 'I‘V adaptaions of this sort of stuff albeit with a more generous budget. fairly exquisite lighting and a remarkable cast. Kirkcaldy: Adam Smith. The Wedding Singer 1 I 2) (Frank Coraci. US. 1997) Drew Barrymore. Adam Sandler. Christine 'l'aylor. 97 mins. After his bride dumps him at the altar. Robbie (Sandler) puts on a happy face at his day job singing at other people's weddings. When his waitress friend (Barrymore) also suffers nuptual disappointment. art unexpected romance blossoms. Packed with a sublime 80s soundtrack. and featuring some of the most amusing fashions since Boogie Nights. this is a genuine out-of-nowhere delight. Glasgow: ABC I-‘ilm Centre. ()deon Quay. Showcase. UCI Clydebank. Edinburgh: UCI. Paisley: Showcase. Wild Things ( 18) (John McNaughton. US. 1997) Neve Campbell. Denise Richards. Matt Dillon. 111 mins. An ‘erotic thriller' that crarns in more plot twists than the Iiverglades has water courses. this effort from Henry: Portrait (2le Serial Killer director McNaughton has little to recommend it. Spoilt schoolgirl and goth outsider accuse teacher of rape. but the frame is revealed in court and further complications follow. This is commercial western cinema at its worst: glossy and crude. Falkirk: I’l'H.

Withnail & I (15) (Bruce Robinson. UK. 1987) Paul McGann. Richard Ii. Grant. Richard Griffiths. 107 mins. 'l'wo out-of- work actors surviving 1969 London giro squalor take a break in a picturesque Lake District cottage. where one of them suffers the attentions of the ageing homosexual owner. entertaining British comedy has a second stab at glory. and it‘s the bleaker end-of—the-decade elements that have lasted best. Glasgow: (il’l‘.

The X-Files: Fight The Future (15) (Rob Bowman. US. 1998) David Duchovny. Gillian Anderson. Martin Landau. 121 mins. 'I'ransferring the most culturally significant TV show of recent times to the big screen was always going to be a risk. However. Fight The Future is basically a really. really good episode of The X -I-‘iles complete with almost incomprehensible plot. With a number of scenes of almost unbearable tension. some incredible effects and a deepening of the Mulder/Scully relationship. this is a thrilling movie which can be enjoyed by the X-phile and novice alike. General release.
