Titanic (12) (James Cameron. US. 1997) Leonardo DiCaprio. Kate Winslet. Billy Zane. I94 mins. Rich girl Rose (Winslet) is unhappily engaged to arrogant Cal (Zane) but falls for third-class passenger Jack (DiCaprio): love blossoms as the ship hits an iceberg in the North Atlantic. In all its on-screen glory. Titanic does indeed look like the most expensive film ever made. conveying both the scale of the disaster and the feeling ofclaustrophobia as the water rises. distinguish Disney‘s first computer-generated animation feature. it's got a cracking adventure story too. A tale of friendship and self-belief combined with an exciting rescue and against-the-clock tension. Toy Story is sprinkled with comic asides. Don‘t be fooled into thinking these toys are just for the kids. Ayr. Odeon. Stirling: Allanpark.

Trial By Fire (15) (Janek Rieke. Germany. 1997) Lisa Martinek. 80 mins. Sparkling social comedy centering on a shy. wimpish twentysomething boy still living with his affluent parents. When he falls in love with an eco—warrior named Lena. his attempts to impress her via a series of 'trials by line are misguided to say the least. Glasgow: GFT. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

The Truman Show (PG) (Peter Weir. US. 1998) Jim Carrey. Laura Linney. Ed Harris. 103 mins. Truman Burbank leads a life of sublime banality in the picture perfect island community of Seahaven.. but is the unwitting star of the world's longest-running documentary soap opera. The Truman Show (the movie) is flawlessly put together. with script and direction perfectly judged. Carrey. still a schmuck but less ingratiating than usual. surprisingly gives the movie its heart. See review. General release. Unforgiven (15) (Clint Eastwood. US. 1992) Clint Eastwood. Gene Hackman. Morgan Freeman. 123 mins. Clint returns to the saddle as a former killer. tamed by his late wife. but pressed intojoining a bounty hunt which takes him to the town of Big Whiskey and into the presence of its sadistic sheriff (Hackman). A darkly disturbing westem which destroys the genre‘s traditional notions ofclear-cut good and evil. instead presenting violent acts as physically and psychologically painful for victim and perpetrator alike. Glasgow: GFT. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

Up In Smoke (Lou Adler. US. 1978) Cheech Marin. Tommy Chong. Stacy Keach. 117 mins. Two LA dopeheads attempt to drive a van made entirely out of marijuana back home from Mexico. Shambling festival of drug-related humour. Glasgowz‘ Grosvenor. Edinburgh: Cameo.

La Vie De Jesus (18) (Bruno Dumont. France. 1997) 96 mins. Dumont's marvellous film. La Vie De Jesus. asks us to see what unemployment. in all its manifestations. actually feels like. It has as its focus twenty-year-old Freddy. an epileptic living with his mum in the small northern town of Bailleul near Lille. There are wonderfully rendered moments here the widescreen vistas of the brooding Nord landscape. an explicit sexual encounter in a field - quite as breathtaking as arty in recent cinema. Glasgow: (EFT.

La Vie Révée Des Anges (The Dream life Of Angels) (15) (Erick Zonca. France. 1998) Elodie Bouchez. Natacha Regnier. 113 mins. Zonca‘s first feature follows Bouchez‘s young backpacker who

TV eye: Jim Carrey in The Truman Show

arrives in Lille without ajob. Managing to wrangle a mental job. she strikes up a friendship with fellow worker Regnier. who offers her a place to stay in the flat she's looking after. Top heavy with precedents. but there's always room for films in acute sympathy with their leading characters. See review. Glasgow: GFT.

Wag The Dog (15) (Barry Levinson. US. 1997) Robert De Niro. Dustin Hoffman. Anne Heche. 97 mins. A spin doctor cooks up a fictitious war to help a US President through a tricky and scandal-filled re-election campaign - all done-and-dusted well before Clinton‘s Monica Lewinsky scandal surfaced. But outside its frighteningly impeccable timing. this Mamet-scripted satire comes in heavy handed form.
