ten day weekend

October is the Ten Day Weekend's busiest month yet, with another intriguing combination of live performances, t a l k a n d f i l m s .

The gigs feature Swelling Meg (The Arches, 19th October). Damon and Naomi supported by Richard Youngs (I3th Note club, let October), El Hombre Trajeado and Cylinder (Shakespeare Street Youth Club, 23rd October), Empress, International Airport and The Famous Boyfriend (The I3th Note cafe, 24th October) and The Styrenes, National Park and Gilded Lil (I3th Note café, 27th October).

Talk comes from the notorious, the informed and the opinionated : the legendary Bez is interviewed by the erudite Anthony H Wilson (Waterstone's, Sauchiehall Street) as the second part of the “Discography” series, and in the month's closing event - “Arc of a jet Plane” (I3th Note café, 3lst October), where journalists from The Wire, NME and The Face will be among those discussing the state of underground music in the UK in I998. On a more practical level, a series of six free workshops, covering management, tour management, publishing, signing to record labels, running a label and promoting concerts, take place at the I3th Note café on IOth/ Ilth October.

The film highlight of the month is the UK. Debut of “The Decline ofWestern Civilization Part 3” introduced by it's

director, Penelope Spheeris. (Gilmorehill Centre, University of Glasgow, Saturday 24th October). Continuing the “Decline” series, which saw her make her directorial debut in I979, it is a detailed and moving look at homeless Los Angeles punks.

Lastly. we have a trio of Velvet Underground related events in the month which would have marked Nico’s 50th birthday. Recently shown at the Edinburgh Film Festival,“Lou Reed: Rock’n’Roll Heart” (Nice’n’Sleazy, 25th October) is full career overview with contributions from John Cale, Patti Smith and Thurston Moore, while the following evening we show the definitive South Bank Show documentary on the Velvet Underground (Garnethill Multicultural Centre, 26th October), followed by a performance of songs from The Velvet Underground and Nico album by an ensemble of local musicians with guest vocalists.
