I Dream Baby Dream at (32. llpm—3am. £3 (£2). First night (15 Oct) at this new venue in the site that used to be the Venue. Residents every week are the Optimo duo (Sub Club Sundays) of Twitch (Pure) and Jilkes (Knucklehead) with their trademark mix of techno. electronica. and house. Guest on the opening night will be one certain policeman‘s son Bez (Happy Mondays/Black Grape). It’s not entirely clear what he’ll be doing. but you can be sure whether it's spinning some tunes. shaking a maraca orjust generally larging it about the place he'll be doing it in style. Members only. available on the door. 17 Oct and monthly. The best and the worst of yesterday‘s forgotten cult favourites screened on super scratchy lo-fi lomm film. I Free Flow at Glasgow School OfArt (downstairs). 9pm-2am. Free. Keepin' it real with early Motown. ska. reggae. soul. JB super funk. Hammond jazz. 70s disco to hip hop. new and retro guitar pop. movie soundtracks. trip hop and drum ‘n' bass with DJs Al Rutherford and Lindsey. Lager £l a pint.

I Hi Karate at the Glasgow School of Art (upstairs). l0pm—2am. £l. Now fast approaching their first birthday at this venue. Neil McMillan and Andrew Divine‘s weekly night has developed into one of the finest funk breakbeat nights in the country. it may be easiest to describe what they do as big beat. but really it's a staggering combination of hip hop. soul. funk. electro. jump-up. ragga and reggae. On 15 Oct it‘s the Hi Karate first Birthday featuring guest DJ The Deadly Avenger. a man at the cutting edge of ‘disco-funk carchase beats fusion‘ and with releases on Depth Charge‘s DC label.

I Psy-phi at The Sub Club. 1 lpm—3am. £4 (£3) guest nights are £6. Phar Out‘s Paul Cawley embarking on a voyage of hip hop, drum 'n’ bass and generally music with the funk. One of the best of its type in Scotland. 8 Oct. it‘s the Psy- phi first birthday with special guests MC Ty and Shorty Blitz from London's rated 'Scratch' and DJ Pogo's Lyricist Lounge. both in Scotland for the first time. 22 Oct. as part of the Sub‘s 12th birthday celebrations Psy-phi welcome the legendary New York ‘old skool' king Jazzy Jay. This is the man. He was part of Afrika Bambaata's Zulu Nation. and worked with the seminal DefJam. He doesn'tjust play hip hop. he is hip hop. See Hit list.

I Root Down at The Queen Margaret Union. l0pm—2am. Price tbc. Students and four guests. DJs Leon and Stuart from the East Village Pharmacy with ‘hip hop. break beats and funky squeaks'. Seems to be a rash of squeaks on a Thursday night. Maybe they're in some way related and these squeaks are just keeping it quiet (well that‘s what squeaks do. don't they?)

I Area 51 at The Glasgow School of Art (upstairs). lOpm-2.30am. £7 (£6/£SGSA). Return to the Art School by the Area 51 crew bringing with them Rennie Pilgrem for the Nu Skool Breakz lI tour. Pilgrem plays tough breakbeat with fat basslines and has been a key part of the scene since 88 when he started his band Rhythm Section. The bloke co- promotes Friction at Bar Rumba with Adam Freeland and Tayo and is generally regarded as having quite a hand in kicking the whole thing off.

I The Ark at The Tunnel. llpm—3.3()am. £7 (£5). Dressed up night in this award winning club. which eight years on still looks the business. The trio of Michael Kilkie. Scott Mackay and Zammo (Rhumba) take no prisoners in the main room for large-scale hard house dancefloor detonators. and then there's Duncan Reid and Simon Foy in Room Two for a slightly less full-on vibe. All drinks £1 before 12.30am. 9 Oct. Ark Supernova night which means cheap drinks all night.
