Turntable ALBUMS

Various: Dance Anthems 2 (Manifesto) Entirely unsurprising collection from Radio One's Dave Pearce that plunders the charts rather than his own record b0x to fill out the two CDs. Most would have tired already of hearing tracks like ’Born Slippy' and ’The Bomb’, but if you’re looking for a collection that brings together the moment’s big tunes with some dirty old classics then get this in the player.

Victor Imbres: Escape From Alcatraz (Greenlight Records)

Bloke who used to be the engineer for Deep Dish comes out with an impressive first album, bringing together deep house, ambient, gritty techno and even a straight-up Euro pumper. Imbres has spent a year on it, with almost too perfect, clinical production, but the underlining funk warmth gives it life. Various: FSUK 3 (Ministry of Sound) Oh, those Crazy Bentley Rhythm Ace boys! Only that pair would have the brass neck to mix Georgie Fame into Hardfloor through into Supergrass and make it work. There are hefty slabs of their trademark big beat frolicking and irreverence towards such niceties as genre with surprises at each tack change. Guaranteed to be the first time that Betty 800, Jefferson Airplane and Ganja Kru rubbed shoulders on the same album.

Envoy: Where There's Life (Soma) Exquisiter lush and layered debut album from Envoy which is already being hailed as one of the best dance albums of the year and deservedly so Classic Soma stuff on essentially a hard pitched Detroit axis which can be split into two parts After a seductive opening, unrelenting mercurial beats fuel the first half and then with a shimmering wah wah and floating sax line the album chills into future funk, pared~down electro and a filmic close.

Various: Gatecrasher - The Album (lNCredibIe)

The Sheffield club re-affirm themselves as the latest pretenders to the superclub throne with this, their first mix album that aims to give a feel of what the club is about. Double CD of 42 tracks split into credible anthems and a full-on dance trip. A quality product.
