CLASSICAL BALLET

Cinderella On tour a: ‘73? A lot rests on Scottish Ballet’s Christmas show. Thousands of once- a-year ballet-goers and once-a-week junior ballerinas do not get trussed up in finest velvet and chiffon for nothing. Lucky then that the beleaguered ballet company pulls its best performance of the year out of a less than promising-looking cracker. The company tips its tutu to widely respected founder Peter Darrell, with this revival of his fondly remembered

Ugly as Cin

version of Cinderella. In a way, it's a gift, as the late founder’s take on the fairytale is a particularly potent ballet with both integrity and widespread appeal. But here the dancers do it not just leg-service, but real justice. The corps throws up the occasional wobble, but generally work as one, attacking moves with unexpected joie de vivre. As the shimmering fuschia—red Fire

more than just decorate they dance.

Fairies in Act One or the diaphanous Dew Fairies in Act Three, they do much

As is only right and proper, the real stars are Yurie Shinohara as Cinderella and Campbell McKenzie as Prince Ramiro. Tiny Shinohara sometimes looks so delicate she might shatter, but recently her dancing has taken on a feisty maturity that defies her delicate frame. Too coy at times for the Girl Power generation, her Cinders then surprises with sudden bouts of astonishing technique and glorious uncontained passion. McKenzie is equally impressive, his robust, loose-fit style diSplaying all the plus-points of male ballet-dancing and none of its fey tendencies. Spilling out into evermore complicated partnerings as the story develops, the pair create real sparks.

It’s not all fluttering hearts though. As Darrell intended, the fairytale has a dark side, with shadowy goings-on in a truly sinister forest and ugly sisters whose spoilt bitchiness looks like kitchen-sink drama compared to the usual pantomimic pairings. Compelling, glamorous and entertaining all at once, SB appears to have found the fairy godmother it seeks in Darrell's Cinderella.
