The land down under

Australia is an essential destination for those wanting independent adventure travel and its popularity is still rising. For the first time, Independent Travellers World will feature ‘Australia — Pack It All ln’, a self-contained series of events offering valuable information about traversing the immense distances and working your way around the country's numerous regions.
'The sheer size and scope of Australia is always under-appreciated by a lot of British travellers,’ says Justine Young, ITW's Marketing Executive. The distance from Perth to Sydney is the same as Dublin to Moscow; so while the spontaneity of backpacking is all part of the experience, believe the cliche — a little planning goes a long way.
Have a rough idea of where you want to go and how much cash you will need to get from one town to the next — there's not always a lot of work to be had in small Outback towns when you discover that your dollars have run out. Also, staying with friends and family can be invaluable, so if possible, plan your extended stops with them and you'll save a fortune, as well as enjoy the luxury of not sleeping in a dorm.
