RENTAL The Truman Show (PG) 103 mins
American movies are like buses: you wait and wait for one and then multiples of the same numeric origin arrive at once. Think horror movies, war epics and political pictures. Hot on the heels of The Truman Shout/s television satire has come Pleasantville and the forthcoming Ed TV. Happily, The Truman Show proves to be more than merely another vehicle for the toothy one's goofy antics.
This is largely down to the Oscar nominees behind the camera — Andrew Gatacca Niccol with a cracking script and Peter Weir for his even-handed direction, which keeps a manic performer in check and an ambitious concept on course. That concept revolves around Jim Carrey‘s eponymous dork coming to realise that he's no everyman but the star of America's top real-life soap opera and that his hometown, Seahaven, is a set littered with hidden cameras and his family and friends are actors.
Carrey’s performance turns the notion that he is an irritating, one-not- very-funny-joke-wonder on its head. Neither does he overshadow the supporting cast, of which Laura Linney stands out as the unnerving Stepford-style perfect wife, while the film’s third Oscar nominee, Ed Harris, dominates from above as the tyrannical, God-like show creator.
The conclusion is a little anti-climactic — a minor criticism and perhaps inevitable considering the quality of the material leading up to it. But it can be forgiven for the priceless final gag about TV viewer behaviour.
