Folding Theatre Puppet Company are just one of the participants in this year's festival

The Puppet Animation Festival

Mon 22 Mar—Sat 17 Apr.

From its relatively humble beginning as a week-long festival at the Netherbow Arts Centre, The Puppet Animation Festival, now in its sixteenth year, has gone on to encompass venues across central and southern Scotland, providing over 150 performances by sixteen companies.

Largely due to a 75% increase in funding from the Scottish Arts Council, the festival can now expand and reach areas which would not normally take part. Festival Director Simon Hart feels that the SAC are now recognising the importance of puppetry in encouraging youngsters into the theatre.

’The provision for children is increasingly important, with Scottish companies performing to thousands of children throughout the year,’ says Hart. ‘Puppetry is popular as it is cost effective and easy for young people to

relate to.’

So for the next month, the country's puppet fraternity will be performing in theatres, village halls and community centres throughout the Central Belt and beyond, bringing traditional puppetry and new, innovative performances to an ever increasing audience. Highlights include DNA’s adaptation of Eric Carle‘s popular story ’The Very Hungry Caterpillar' and Mimika's ’Landscapes', a journey through some of the world’s most colourful creations. There’s also a newly extended programme of animation, with the lions share being shown in Glasgow for the first time.

If your experience of puppetry is Punch and Judy and a sandy bum down by the beach, it's time to think again. (Helen Monaghan)
