COMEDY CLUB REVIEW

The Stand Edinburgh, Sat 22 May -.-*=.-

DeSpite the fact that a bunch of loudmouthed solicitors chose this as their 'Iets go out, get pished and shout and heckle all the way through the entertainment' evening, this was a fine opportunity to sample a broad selection of tasty comic

delights.

Compere for the evening, Jane Mackay gwckly endeared herself to the audience by insulting them indiVidtially wherever possible Astoundingly, this method worked a treat and even 'the lovely, big breasty man' as she referred to one poor front-row dweller, lapped up her brilliantly sharp reckonings. She worked the crowd With ease in antiCipation of a heady 'international' bill, Motherwell, LiVingston, Edinburgh and Toronto being fairly international anyway.

The proceedings commenced With a few choice nuggets of Wisdom from Mark Bratchpiece, coming over, perhaps unWittingly, as the lv'iotherv-rell Woody Allen with facial hair. He Suffered slightly for not attempting to put down the heckling solicrtors, pretending to be deaf instead, while extoiling the Virtues of timeshares, sperm banks and Lanarkshire With Witty aplomb

The open guest spot was ably filled by newcomer Steven Madil, who despite his nervousness, knocked out a few understated, but hilarious observations on the Joy and pain of being a triplet, and rural policing.

Brendan Moohan’s endearing, if not hugely innovative brand of thoroughly Scottish comic poetry went down well with the by now, warmed up crowd. He mixed poems and Jokes With unaccompanied versions of well-known songs With the words changed, renditions of 'Lola’ and 'Copa Cabana' getting the kids

singing along.

The evening's headliner and highlight, Canadian Stewart FranCIs hit the audience with hilarious, rapid fire one liners on Just ab0ut everything from airline pilots to fishing With his sadistic father Despite being from overseas he still found time to practice that age-old Scottish sport known as ‘taking the piss out of Fife’ a game he has an obVious talent for.
